A bit rainy in central NY this spring, but plants always amaze. The porch greenhouse is bustling with seedlings. Grafting apple trees continues, along with planting new varieties.

This impressive espalier was a trained Malus domestica 'James Grieve' (apple). This tree must look beautiful in the spring covered with pale pink flowers and in the autumn when there will be yellow fruit blushed with bright.

The walled garden at Gordon Castle has two rectangular areas of Malus 'Evereste' (crab apple) as part of the formal entrance. The plants have been trained as espaliers on tall trunks. This type of training can be called a pleached hedge. This cultivar is a disease resistant cultivar having masses of cup-shaped, white flowers from red buds in late spring, followed by large, red-flushed, orange-yellow fruit.

Forming a screen on the side of this pergola is Malus domestica 'Red Falstaff' (apple) which has been espalier trained. It is probably grafted on an M26 dwarfing rootstock. The flowers are self-fertile producing a late-season dessert apple with a crisp, juicy flesh encased in a red skin.

About 4 years ago I started this espaliered grapefruit tree. Today it's putting out a ton of grapefruit and it's branching is finally taking shape. Here's the original article... 🍋 https://mindyourdirt.com/2018/07/08/branching-out-a-humble-attempt-at-growing-an-espaliered-grapefruit-tree/ 🍋 Another few years and it will really take form as the primary forked branches thicken up. But so far, I'm beyond happy with the results! 🌳 🍋 🌳 🍋 🌳 #MindYourDirt #espaliered #grapefruit #pruning #cityboyfarmer #urbanfarmer #sustainability #sustainable #homestead #homesteading (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjEfeYNJ7fi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
We stopped at Bunnings on the road trip home, since we needed both a break and a new smoke detector. This poor little fig tree was very, very reduced; but he’s such a healthy guy, covered in new buds, and not nearly as root bound as I expected (see pic 2. I was expecting him to be very rootbound). So now he has a new spot with the other #espaliered fruit trees, and in a few years we’ll hopefully have delicious figs. https://www.instagram.com/p/CQFlTktDkrI/?utm_medium=tumblr
