A horror ask for Penny. - "I don't really like to go outside. But the puppet strings leave me no choice."
“Penny? Arent you coming?”
Penny looked between the door and Ruby, her body radiated with what she could only describe as fear. “I… do not really like going outside.” Though the puppet strings always make me, she had desperately wanted to say those last few words aloud as her eyes caught the thin strings that wrapped around her limbs. Though, the last time she had said anything about those strings, Pietro had tried to explain to her that they werent there, that she was seeing things, and General Ironwood almost seemed pleased at the idea. “We… we can stay inside, right? A-and help Mantle that way?”
Ruby sighed and closed the door. “I… guess we can. Maybe we can monitor the grimm activity and send the others.”
With a smile, Penny sat down at the computer Pietro had made for her and kept watch over the grimm sensors throughout the city of Mantle. After having been rebuilt and designated as the Protector of Mantle, she made sure she could keep watch on the whole city without ever leaving Pietro’s workshop. Always cooped up so the puppet strings would never drag her outside again.
An alarm started to blare out on one of the monitors and Penny quickly turned to it. “Looks like grimm are starting to get into Sector 9.”
Ruby quickly pulled up the map of Mantle on her scroll and looked it over. “That’s just a few streets over. We can make our way out-”
“No need for us to leave here.” Penny linked into the computer and started to bring up her drone program. Another monitor showed the drones high in the air receive the signal from Penny and make their way to the grimm to dispatch them. Once the drones were on their way, she disconnected and went back to the monitors. “I have created a network of drones to keep everyone safe. Until the wall is rebuilt, I can send my drones around to take care of any grimm that makes their way through.”
“But… what about being a huntress?”
“You can still be a huntress and you never have to be hurt.” Penny paused as she felt one of the puppet strings start to pull on her arm. Out of the corner of her eyes, she watched as the invisible string started to wrap itself around Ruby. With a sharp inhale, she closed her eyes to get the strings out of her mind. “You… and your friends can be safe. No more need for anyone to risk their lives.”
“Then what’s the point?”
“The… point?”
“What’s the point in keeping everyone safe if we’re not the one’s really doing it?” Ruby put a hand on Penny’s shoulder, her arm shook as she slowly gripped her friend. “We know there’s a risk to being a huntress and its a risk we accepted a long time ago. And now that we have our licenses, we can finally be out there to help everyone.”
Penny slowly opened her eyes and turned to Ruby. She wanted to tell her exactly why she had to stay inside as she watched the puppet strings start to wrap around herself and Ruby, that the moment she stepped outside, she was no longer herself. And no matter how long she could be herself, it was never long enough to see where the strings led. “I… I do not want to lose you.”
“You wont lose me, but I cant just sit around here when I could be out there helping people.”
“But Ruby-” Penny reached out to Ruby and her words quit as she watched her friends step outside the workshop. All she could was watch as the puppet strings wrapped around each of Ruby’s limbs as she walked. She knew Ruby was safe from the strings, that they never affected anyone else they wrapped around, however the fear of losing her friends stayed in her heart.
The strings had started to tug on Penny once more and she felt her body move to the door, a voice whispered through her mind as she reached the doorway. Her hands moved to clutch her head as the voice grew louder and louder, an image of a chess piece flashed over and over in her mind.
The Queen is coming.
She wasnt sure when she stepped outside the workshop or when she started to feel the cold air rush across her synthetic skin, though she knew she was no longer in control of her body as she felt each step. Her mind started to drift and wander as the strings pulled on each part of her, no longer able to keep a thought as she was pulled closer to Amity Arena. As Penny took to the air, her mind no longer fought the strings, her body a mere puppet to the virus that took Beacon down. The drones she once commanded now formed a cloud above the arena as they waited for instruction as a single command ran through Penny’s mind:
Protect everyone, no matter the cost.
