( Long msg ahead sorry lol ) Still don't know how kibbe came up with such a genius way to type bodies , like it's insane to know someone's type without mathematical measurements , just with height ( which isn't MASSIVELY important, it's more about the perception as you say ) and how fat/muscles/bone structure are distributed and what kind of fabrics could be draped on top . And this isn't the end of it ! Truly baffling to me . Also I can confidentiality say that you , caro , are the absolute best at analyzing and finding stuff that most people miss . thank you! now, to me the genius of kibbe is: when hollywood's glamour era faded, he took the work of belle northrup + harriet mcjimsey and galvanized it into a styling method anyone can use to accept and clothe their physique. i simply think of him as the one stylist who pulled off the best marketing. his consultation prices mirror that. but the whole yin/yang concept came from belle's book on costume history.

then, mcjimsey created the 6 main types (see below), the lost ingenue type included. even in this rudimentary system with all its dangerous "looks equals personality" and "you can type by expression" faults, i can identify myself as a dramatic (being 5'9 narrows it down for me anyway, average heights have a harder time finding their ID). kibbe only took the good stuff and ran with it, he didn't invent it.

mcjimsey even had a base analysis of how our frame, curves, and muscles determined type. to an exaggerated degree, even typing by posture and gait and perceived level of elegance, etc. romantics could have violet eyes, even, probably to prove a point how dreamy they are? thankfully, kibbe removed a lot of that, though he added his own fantasy bits sometimes. still, those 6 types were pretty concise and had the names we know before david came.

gladly it's no longer some racial personality system. for mcjimsey, only the ingenue is "fair", and the dramatic is "dark, olive". i myself am severely pale, rather fitting kibbe's dramatic description of "anything goes, as long as it's extreme", better managing to gauge the concept. advances in seasonal color analysis really helped there, too. or, many of us don't fit the "type yourself by voice" schtick obviously, any type can be "flirtatious", and classics can have green eyes. the list goes on. the metamorphosis made all of this more universal. it could be less embellished, but i guess part of kibbe is the lack of science and math indeed 😅 we could use more ratios and measurements there.

he succeeded getting all the credit largely by promising everyone the same level glow-up no matter their body, arranging and diversifying belle's yin/yang idea to 13 and not 2 types. he IS baffling in how he created this complicated but often accurate categorization that is more applicable than not (i personally am much happier finally knowing and styling my own type, it worked for me - otherwise, i wouldn't talk to you about it. kibbe helps me understand why i look the way i look, so i figure it helps others, too). and it got less weirdly racist and MBTI-like nowadays, thankfully. still room to improve. we came from this:

height is important for modern kibbe, the old style relies on old hollywood roles and flair, that's where perception came in. but even mcjimsey had a height cutoff, to be a natural or dramatic you had to be at least 5'7 and i agree with it. that's just where we see vertical, globally, past the 170cm mark a person is not tiny in any relation. although, that is also a socially constructed bias. kibbe bridging subjective and objective aesthetics is the crux of the matter.

as for the missing 6th type, many people have tried to add to the system, while kibbe ironically subtracted from it, removing pure types except D and R. personally, his 80s version was perfect as it was, that's why it blew up: because it would fit all of us, and anyone could find themselves. deleting 3 whole types was a severe decision, imo. the community compensated by adding ethereal, oneiric, etc essences and mixing style systems. so far, i'd rather see a better fusion of color theory and kibbe first. new types are experimentation.

Unused Essences - Part 2

As I mentioned at the beginning of Part 1. I originally wanted to discuss everything in only one post, but because I hit the 30 image limit. I had to split it into two.

If you haven't yet, you can read Part 1 right here.

So without further fanfare, here's the rest. Below the cut again.

It’s fish. Just fish

Now this is where the unused essences start to get… even less complete than what we have seen this far. While there is a flair model leftover, and even a palette of paints. That palette is incomplete, It has a patterned paint swatch, but only one. The second pattern swatch is black, pure complete blackness. And the rest are pure white like the other essences we have discussed.

Now while I have been showing a render of the swatches up to this point, I do think it is worth showing how it looks in-game as well. Because what would be the second patterned swatch is instead completely pitch black.

It’s also worth mentioning that the one (1) swatch we do have is very similar to the rainbow trout swatch visible in-game. In-fact they are virtually identical to one another.

Sad Bear is an interesting case, while every essence that we have looked at so far has had some paints and text tied to it, this one does not. The only thing that remains is this very cute looking flair model.

We don’t know exactly what this would have been. It’s possible that this was just an earlier form of the final sad essence, but we don’t have any definitive evidence, leaving this one as a bit of a mystery.

Burn is another even more interesting one, and is more mysterious than Sad Bear. 

This one is unique in that it does not have any leftover text, or even a flair model, but it does have two full pattern swatches. But this is even more interesting, with everything discussed before, the Material Sets that allow the paints to appear in-game could be brute forced and loaded in the PC version with no problems, this however cannot.

As a result, whether or not there are any flat paints to accompany the palette is completely unknown.

Ok hear me out on this one.

This last one is just the Cherry Blossom essence. Except under the name of Apple Blossom. Every bit of text, every paint swatch, every everything is the exact same as the final Cherry Blossom, but with ‘appleblossom’ as its internal name. However in the actual text that is displayed in-game, it is still referred to as Cherry Blossom.

Interestingly, while the duplicate textures remain in the game’s files. The material set to actually make them appear in-game seems to no longer exist. Creating another Burn essence situation, where they can’t be seen in-game.

Although it would probably just be a duplicate of the Cherry Blossom’s set as well.

It is worth noting that there are also a few other models in the game files bearing the Apple Blossom name, but none of them follow the standard convention for essence models which is ‘flairEssenceName’, but they do at least provide an alternative idea of what an Apple Blossom essence could have looked like.

And with that, these have been almost all of the unused essences in MySims. But believe it or not, there are still more unused essences to talk about! A whopping 27 that I could find at the time I’m writing this.

However they are… much less interesting compared to the ones discussed today. These have all had some kind of interesting leftover attached to them, whether that’s a model, textures, or text. But these remaining essences on the other hand…

Are comprised entirely out of very basic placeholder assets, which make them not very interesting to look at in comparison.

I do want to talk about them at some point in the near future though, and I can say with certainty that it will be before 2032!

Ingenue vs Gamine: Comparative Essence Analysis

I feel like most people get Ingenue & Gamine essence mixed up. They're easy to confuse because both these essences make the individual look younger than they are and give them a "cute" appearance but there are key differences between the two.

If you look at their features, they have full cheeks, mostly big eyes, a small tapered chin, round foreheads and an overall round face. They look very doll-like and innocent. Ingenue is extreme yin essence so these women look very girl-like even when they're much older (Miranda is 40, Nicola is 37)

All of these women have Gamine essence. Similar to Ingenue essence, all of them look young and cute but while Ingenues have more rounded features, Gamines have a combination of sharp and soft features. Gamine is yin with a dash of yang whereas Ingenue is pure yin. Gamines don't look as "innocent" as Ingenues, they have a kind of mischievous look to them. They're more likely to be cast as the troublemaker who plays silly pranks than the goody two shoes. Ingenues tend to have round faces overall whereas Gamines have more angular faces with pointy chins with smaller eyes and lips. They have a tomboyish charm.

I wanted to juxtapose Shu Qi & Ni Ni with some Gamines because I feel like because of their features they can be mistyped as Gamines even though they're Ingenues.

One distinguishing trait is their rounded foreheads, this is a very youthful trait because we associate it with babies. Another is how their overall features are rounded not angular, pointy or sharp. They also do not seem "naughty" or "mischievous" looking. Their faces seem softer more delicate as opposed to the Gamines.

The right haircut for your face type

PSA: YOU DO NOT NEED TO FOLLOW THESE RULES IF ITS NOT WHAT YOU LIKE, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LOOK BAD IF YOU DECIDE NOT TO FOLLOW THEM. Had to get that out of the way because I know I've been told i "can't" wear certain aesthetics or that i would look ugly if it doesn't match my essence. This is not true, but matching certain elements to your essence can have a harmonious effect.

I think the best thing about essences is seeing how the same thing creates a different effect on different people.

For example

Jen has a very strong natural essence which means her features are friendly, open and relaxed being mainly composed of longer rectangular shapes. This haircut does not harmonize that well with her features and face shape and she is much more iconic in her voluminous haircuts during the run of friends.

Cameron also has some natural but she has more gamine in my opinion so this hairstyle looks very different on her. The short hairstyle matches her shortened features and amplifies this cute effect. In a hairstyle similar to rachels shoulder length cut it looks very good, but it gives a more romantic effect and plays down cameron's gamine essence slightly creating a different impression.
