I realize what bothers me so much about all the anti-Targaryen rhetoric in AKOTSK season 1— It makes me concerned that they are going to make Dunk and Egg’s story about how this one ruling family is crazy and evil, not a critique of class inequality on the whole as it is meant.

Like yes, the Targaryens are bad and corrupt and the villains of the Hedge Knight. But they also are a representation and symptom of feudalism. Any other family in their place would be the villains too, and the main series proves that. The opposition King Egg faces when trying to enact reforms to help the smallfolk is not the Targaryens, but the lords of Westeros. Now, his kids’ selfishness and Egg’s own flaws contribute to his failure, but they are not the sole issue. Not by a long shot.

Let us hope that the Sworn Sword forces them to lock in on the deeper themes of the story. Because you can’t blame Eustace Osgrey trying to force his peasants to die for his pissing contest on the Targaryens. And I don’t mean to minimize the complexity of Eustace— he is a product of his society, same as the Targaryens. The Osgrey-Webber dispute is a microcosm of larger wars like the Blackfyre Rebellion, that’s the whole point. It shows how from the very top to the very bottom, everyone is constantly leveraging whatever power feudalism has afforded them at the expense of those beneath. The Targaryens, the Baratheons, the Lannisters, the Blackfyres, the Webbers, and even just a random landed knight.

I will try to remain optimistic though. Since the Targs are the antagonists of the Hedge Knight, it makes sense to focus heavily on them and their villainy. S1 does still show how most of the lords at Ashford Meadow dismiss Dunk and even laugh in his face when he is about to die. They made them even more unlikeable than they were in novella, which really heightened Baelor’s hero moment by contrast. And Daeron’s line about how Aerion was decent as a child is a refreshing change of pace from the “gods flip a coin” mentality that GOT applied so insultingly to Daenaerys (though Aerion Brightflame was ironically the last Targaryen I would have ever expected to be used to make this point).

We shall have to see. Still was an amazing adaptation, and I think the TSS and TMK will be done justice too. It’s only that I have some reservations about how they will portray the story past the already written novellas…
