Former Pixar Animator Creates 'The Book of Mojo' with a Black Girl Superhero
In the world of superheroes, Black men are underrepresented, and women, even less so. Former Pixar animator Everett Downing wants to change that.
In The Book of Mojo, Downing’s new project, the leading character, Lucretia "Lucy" Jenkins, is a 13-year-old Black girl learning about her magical powers. With the help of her spirit guide, Lucy finds a way to take control of urban streets. Downing aims to transform this self-published comic book into an animated series. He spoke with ESSENCE about The Book of Mojo, and how the birth of his daughter inspired the Lucy character. Read the rest here.

MOJOOOOOOOO!!!
Please go support Mojo on Indiegogo! There’s less than 72 hours left and I would love it if their campaign could reach their goal TODAY so we can reach some stretch goals!!
A diverse team in animation is so, so rare and giving them the opportunity to get this project running will lead to an UNFATHOMABLE abundance of support and inspiration to children of color! There are so many All-Stars jam packed into this team, from the likes of Disney/Pixar Films, Steven Universe, and more! Please show them some love if you can and spread the word ASAP!!
In continuation of our Fathers Day weekend special spotlighting the man behind the Book of Mojo - Creator/Director Everett Downing, Team MOJO presents part I of Everett’s Q&A.
And if you truly miss interacting with Everett, give him a tweet at @Mr._Scribbles. Wish him a Happy Father’s Day. We, at Team MOJO, know it would warm his heart.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY EV!
More than just a very talented artist, a welcome collaborator, and really great guy, Everett is also an awesome father. Like any other artist, Everett’s work stems from his vivid imagination. What often also fuels an artist’s drive to manifest their vision is an inspirational cause. In the instance of the Book of Mojo, Ev’s guiding light comes from his two little girls.
Like an other great dad on the planet, Ev would go to great lengths to see to his children’s health & happiness. Comic Book resources just ran a tweet through twitterverse Friday about a man in the UK who created a short film, "Amazing Spider-Dad," to honor his son's memory. This man created this video after his son’s tragic passing because his love was that strong. Thus in a similar vein, Everett painstakingly works into the wee hours of the night after work to realize a vision not only for his artistic needs & merits, but especially for his children.

Contributing to the Book of Mojo means you not only support a visionary artist or help bring a great story to life; your contributions also show you value a vision of inclusivity, no matter what, not just for the sake of Everett’s children but also your children, the children in your lives, and in the world.
As always, your financial participation & spreading the word is much appreciated (as well as great Fathers Day gift for Everett). Many thanks for taking the time to learn more about Everett and the inspiration behind the Book of Mojo.
Cheers,
Team MOJO is a-Go Go !
