Happy #NationalBirdDay! Bird watching is one of my pastimes and living next to @evergladesnps makes that endeavor all the more fruitful. One Last Look and the Road West.
3/3/2014 – I was headed for Ft Myers, FL. Before I left the park, I had one stop to make. I had seen wood storks and another rare bird at one of my stops yesterday and decided to stop and get whatever pics I could. Paurotis Pond isn’t large but I don’t have a long distance telephoto and they were flying around and nesting on the other side. Seeing these two large species-about three and four feet long-and the bright pink colors of the spoonbill against the backdrop of a bright blue sky contrasting the deep hues of green vegetation and dark pond water was a fitting last scene of the Everglades to remember.
For the most part, I drove along the lesser traveled highways of south Florida to Ft Myers, passing the entrance to the very busy Shark Valley area of the park, and through reservation and preserves. Along the way, I needed a quick stop and found one of the visitor centers of the Big Cypress National Preserve, to the northwest of the Everglades. I walked a little boardwalk and at the end caught glimpses of three manatees, mostly underwater but showing a nose or tail occasionally. What a great surprise for a bathroom break!
