One thing that really drew me to Snape's character is the embodiment of "The dog that weeps after it kills is no better than the dog that doesn't. My guilt doesn't purify me." Because it doesn't, but like he knows that, he knows he isn't morally upstanding. Same thing with Sirius (who's really starting to grow on me). He was on the right side of the war from the start, but he is canonically a bit of a shitty person, and has demonstrated acts of casual cruelty, which some may consider worse than just cruelty. The difference is, I'd say Severus isn't seeking redemption but instead atonement, Sirius is asking for neither.
