I don't really post cosplay to this blog much, but in the ongoing disaster that is so much of social media, I find I'm wanting to catalogue out the crafting process in a little more detail that a tweet on a broken site lets me.

A while back, I played the Mass Effect games, and aside from taking over my life, it also kick started me into actually looking into how to make armour out of eva foam. I've been cosplaying for over ten years, and in that time, I have always said I will never work with foam becuase it was largely intimidating and I was comfy in my sewing skills.

Enter, Shepard.

Turns out, all I needed was enough motivation--and wanting to be able to emody a character that has come to mean so much to me would do it--and lo and behold, here I am three months into an ambitious project. It is also one that I'm dilberately taking slow, both because I am Old and cannot con crunch anything these days, and because I want to be intentional with it. I want this to be something I enjoy the process of, can wear multiple times, and be proud of the end result.

So here are some progress shots, with some more detail in the cut below.

Patterns! Lots of cutting out of patterns. The base patterns are from Raisin Cosplay with some modifications by me for fit and specific details that I wanted. This came with a learning curve of just foam in general, bevel cuts, and using a dremel for sanding.

Undersuit with a very nice textured fabirc I managed to find (including some #blessed 4-way seams no one will ever see), and the armour starting to come together.

Some weathering, sealing, priming, and paint testing. We've officially finished gluing everything, so now the painting will begin in earnest!

And my crowning glory, lights! This was a learning curve, but I'm very happy with how it came together.

There are definitely parts of this project I could do neater if I was to do it again, but all in all I'm very happy with how it looks for the first time using foam. I'm keen to get through the rest of it, and then start the process of working out how to make it all attach together.

Evy wakes slowly. Warm, both from the sun that is bleeding in from the window, curtains hanging uselessly at the sides and from the man nestled against her back. An arm loosely over her waist, a leg threaded between her own, Kaidan's hand tucked against her chest, Evy’s held in his grip. There's a new ring on her finger. A simple, plain band.

“I thought you might need someone to talk to after… everything…” Miranda trailed off and swallowed as Shepard’s haunted gaze burned into her. Stupid. This was stupid. Shepard didn’t trust her enough to talk about anything. She didn’t even think Shepard liked her or saw her as anything more than Cerberus. And she was, but that still rankled and Miranda wasn't sure why.
