The full game plans to double the level-count to twelve plus add different routes and other secrets to chase after, and with as solid and polished as the game feels already, that’s something to look forward to. In its Early Access release state, though, Ex-Zodiac is a slightly simpler Star Fox tribute that does an excellent job of filling in the void left by Nintendo’s abandoned series.

On-rails space shooters similar to Star Fox are few and far between. Ex-Zodiac was recently shown off in the demo week on Steam and it's shaping up to be an impressive title. It is still early days for this title and currently there is a Kickstarter for it. Based on the demo game, it impressively reproduces the gameplay and look of Star Fox. While Randomised Gaming isn't a fan of this type of graphics choice, it is a matter of opinion. Controls are spot on as is the level design, with each level changing as you fly though it, keeping the gameplay fresh. Difficulty is spot on as well and the runs shown in this video were after a couple of practice attempts. Note the footage shown is a mix of demo versions and this may be very different to the finished game. One to watch for the future.

Ex-Zodiac is great for a number of reasons - it's a Star Fox inspired rail shooter with aspects of Space Harrier, it's got a great mix of combat styles, from lock-on missiles to straight laser spam, the bosses are well-designed and fun to fight, and the retro aesthetic is top-notch.
But most importantly of all... you can blow up Greggs trucks. The UK purveyor of soggy pastries Greggs. Yep, that Greggs.
Hit the end of the line for now. The rest of the achievements are all S-ranking levels, which hoo boy. Single digits aplenty for everything but the Euclides Belt.
It sounds like four more levels are pending. Hopefully, they'll get out before the decade ends.
Gonna skip doing a full post-game evaluation in light of that, but uh...basically, if you're a "Star Fox" / "Space Harrier" nut, here you go. Ta-da. The din dins aren't really there otherwise for us, so it's nice to see something high quality in such a niche genre.
Current price is ~$11.99 USD. So, about a buck a level, plus a handful of bonus missions. God knows I've paid more for this style of game.
