I am never flying, ever again. I accept this will limit my life. But I am having such wild, horrible stress over a United Airlines fuckup that it is moving steadily up the list of personal grudges that I will be taking to my grave. Literally, when I am cremated I want a physical list of these grudges burned and added to my ashes. I want them read aloud at my funeral as The List of Things to Hate Forever With the Passion of a Thousand Dying Suns. I am normally a very reasonable person, but I only have two modes. It is very difficult to activate the Hate Forever With the Passion of a Thousand Dying Suns mode, but airline travel has just about made it. I’ve pencilled it in for now. (Southwest miiiiiiight be made an exception, I haven’t decided yet.)

Super brief version: a mistake made a month ago has resulted in an extra $400 charge today. The AI assistant is, of course, worse than useless. One call to customer service was dropped. Another said a supervisor would call me back, and never did. Estimated call hold time (complete with atrocious pseudo-Rhapsody-in-Blue hold music) is over 90 minutes. The inability to get a human who could fix the problem has resulted in, at minimum, a complete loss of faith in the system. The only remaining option is to avoid.

Happily, I live in a literal cabin in the woods. By the end of today I will be back in my cabin, newly traumatized, and will likely refuse to leave my house for a week. Time to become a badger, and try to forget what airplanes even are.

The List of Things to Hate Forever With the Passion of a Thousand Dying Suns, in roughly chronological order:

- A junior high science teacher who was mean to me, I have intentionally forgotten his name, in the hope that the universe will do the same

- Susan, the former head of the National Scouting Museum

- My ex-husband

- This one goat who is almost certainly dead now

- A pastor who failed my mother while planning my father’s funeral

- My friend Nick’s breathtakingly abusive mother

- My friend Jen’s ex-husband

- United Airlines in particular and flying by plane in general
