🇸🇩 In the remote Nuba Mountains of Sudan, body and face painting became far more than decoration, it evolved into identity, storytelling, spirituality, and art.

Among the Kau people and other Nuba communities, intricate designs were traditionally painted using natural pigments, ash, clay, charcoal, and plant-based colours. Every pattern could carry meaning, representing beauty, strength, age, ceremonies, protection, or cultural belonging.

Some designs were bold and geometric, while others were inspired by nature, animals, scars, and the surrounding landscape of the Nuba Mountains themselves.

Anthropologists and photographers have long described the traditions of the Nuba peoples as some of the most visually striking forms of body art on Earth, not because they were created for fashion or social media, but because they were deeply woven into everyday cultural life.
