August Updates

August has been a super busy month for me! As I mentioned in my previous post, I’ve been taking an intensive Hebrew course, which is a lot of work. This week is my last week, which is very exciting, but also quite nerve-racking, as I have a huge final on Thursday. We’ve learned over 500 new vocabulary words thus far, and it’s unclear how many more we’ll be asked to learn for the final! This class is super challenging, but very rewarding.

In addition to my Hebrew class, I’ve started interning for a Smith alumna! Smith has a very tight-knit alumnae network. When I decided to take a semester off, I reached out and asked if anyone had any recommendations. By the end of the week, I got an internship with Aubrey Menard, a Smith alumna and author of Young Mongols (https://www.youngmongols.com/). So far, I’ve just done publicity work part-time for her, but i’m excited to do even more once Hebrew ends!

I’ve also been reading a lot, and playing tons of Dungeons & Dragons! D&D is pretty popular at Smith, so I learned how to play at the beginning of sophomore year. Now, I’m playing in two campaigns and running a third! It’s mostly with Smith people (but also one of my Hampshire friends Sidney, as well as a friend of a friend), which has been a great way to stay in touch with everyone. We play over Zoom (Smith provides a free subscription), use a variety of websites to help, including DND Beyond. I’m really excited to keep playing with everyone, especially since we’ll all still be scattered across the globe this semester.

Job Type:  Interns will be required to work 40 hours a week/Full-Time 

Time Length: The Fall 2018 internship will run for 14 weeks beginning on September 4, 2018 and ending on December 7, 2018. For students on the quarter system, the internship will run from September 17, 2018 to December 21, 2018.    

Compensation:  The Foundation will provide interns with a stipend and reimbursements for a portion of the expenses directly related to their internship. Please note the Foundation will not provide relocation or housing assistance.

Summary of Position:   We are looking for interns who have excellent time management and organizational skills, are strong writers and researchers, and are eager to work in a fast-paced office environment. Interns will play a key role in providing departments at the Obama Foundation with the administrative, logistical, and operational assistance needed to execute their work. INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY IN NEW YORK CITY

NYC Midwives is looking for a Communications Intern to support the organization’s social media presence and set the groundwork for a longterm & sustainable internship program!

NYC Midwives is membership organization of midwives residing and/or working in New York City. The chapter aims to support midwives and the practice of midwifery, while increasing visibility of and access to midwifery care in the city.  Learn more.

Applications DUE 7/10.  This internship will run from 8/1/17 - 12/20/17 (though this is negotiable depending on individual circumstances).

Intern responsibilities would include:

Posting to Facebook, instagram, twitter

Brainstorming and working with experienced midwives to promote the organization, midwifery, and education about birth

Start monthly or weekly online projects such as Meet-the-midwives  or birth stories from folks who've worked with midwives.

Run a once or twice annual event to bring the midwifery community together with doulas, other birth workers, and folks in search of midwifery care.

Start a Queer & Trans Pregnancy & Parenting Group

Intern qualifications:

A passion and drive for promoting midwifery and birth education

Residence in or near New York City, NY and the ability to do on-site work for creating & organizing events

Ability to commit at least 10 hours a week to the internship (or more if desired by intern)

#LubinLife Internship Q&A: Mikela Stevkovski ‘18

Mikela Stevkovski ‘18, from Westhampton, New York, is a finance major on our New York City campus. Mikela is currently the president of Pace’s ALPFA chapter (Association of Latino Professionals for America). She has also made Dean’s List, and is a member of Alpha Chi, Alpha Lambda Delta, Lambda Sigma Honor Society, and National Society of Leadership and Success. Mikela is currently an intern at Morgan Stanley, and loving every minute of it! 

Where are you currently interning? Have you had any other internship previously?  I am currently interning at Morgan Stanley in the Institutional Equity division. Previously, I had an accounting internship at a small firm during the summer.

What have you been working on at your internship? Has it sparked an interest in a career/area of study you hadn’t already thought about? Or has it confirmed that you are on the right path? I’ve been working on a team in the institutional equities division. My team helps build client relationships and execute trades for certain clients. It’s opened my eyes to different areas in finance. Before this internship, I never knew exactly how big deals were made and decided. I’m very happy with this division, and it’s definitely helped me realize that I’m on the right track.

Do you believe your internship experience has helped to prepare you for your future? I believe this internship opened my eyes to the world around me. Before this experience, I never knew what it was like to work on a trading floor, but now I get to experience it first hand. It taught me many different skills and I’ve been responsible for many high-end tasks...my boss has no doubts in the work I produce. My co-workers also want to see me learn. When there are meetings or conferences, they extend the invitation to me. I am very grateful for that.

Any advice for other Lubin students looking for internships? My advice for students would be to stay proactive in the internship process. Visit Career Services and get to know your adviser. Also, students are at Pace for an education, and if they feel they need help in a class they should visit the Tutoring Center, Writing Center, or their professor. I’ve never had a professor who didn’t make the time to see me for questions. Without the resources given at Pace I would not be in the position I am today.

Virtual Internship opportunities for the Fall

VSFS is the largest virtual internship program in the world. U.S. students contribute about 10 hours a week to their government, doing real work and gaining real experience in the process. VSFS is the smart and transparent way for government and citizens to collaborate on projects. Federal colleagues from across government submitted projects with more than 900 openings for U.S. college students. This amazing array of projects from 30 agencies is now available for students to review. Between July 2-22, U.S. college students can logon to USAJOBS.govand apply to their top three projects. Agencies make their selections in August, and selected eInterns start in early September. Most projects conclude by the following April.
