#fallficaday - Day 13 Fest: Wolfstar Big Bang

Summary: Sirius is a sleep demon who gives nightmares to humans. Remus is an insomniac with hallucinations.

“No!” Sirius smacked the plastic cup filled with stale cereal out of his punished human’s hand. He responded a touch more dramatically this time to Sirius’ sudden physical appearance, though it was mostly due to the fact that his food now covered the floor. “Eat some real food and go to sleep!” Sirius’ skin prickled with a thousand fiery needles—release, release, release.

“My Cheerios,” his punished human mumbled, eyes glued to the ground forlornly.

“How can you even be functioning on this little sleep?” Sirius’ voice pitched higher and higher as he spoke. He wondered if he was capable of yanking his fake human hair out.

Comments: This was incredibly cute. All of the ways Sirius learns about human things, from memes and references to sex and emotions, has to be some of the funniest shit I’ve ever read. Sleep demon!Sirius is a true gift; he is adorable and innocent, for lack of a better word. I loved how much went into the discussion on mental health, too. The illustrations were wonderful; I especially liked seeing Sirius in his demon form.

#fallficaday - Day 21

Author: toyhto Rating: Mature Word Count: 25,931 Type: Non-magic!AU

Summary: A story in which Remus Lupin meets a dark handsome stranger and they go for a road trip to rescue one little brother who’s probably into something very bad.

Comments: There’s something about this fic, I don’t know if it’s the on-point dialogue or the characterizations or the road trip drama, but it’s so gripping. I seriously loved these characters and their awkward, roundabout ways of doing things and expressing emotions. I’m kind of mad I didn’t read this sooner, it was fantastic.

Author: veeagainst Rating: Mature Word Count: 6,830 Era: MWPP

Summary: When a craze for pulpy romance novels about Dark Creatures starts in Gryffindor, Sirius reads one about a werewolf -- and decides to write a better one.

Comments: So cute, Sirius is the cutest, this whole thing is very sweet. Sirius is adorably earnest, and his attempt to write his own erotic novel and Remus’ comments are definitely my favorite part. The way it shows the ridiculousness in Harlequin-style romance novels is hilarious, but it also points out the frequent fetishization of groups deemed as “Other” in literature. Intertextuality, romance, and fluff is a surprisingly winning combo.

Author: copperbadge Rating: Mature Word Count: 7,169 Era: Post-Hogwarts

Summary: The Marauders take a road trip.

Comments: A nice, easy-going get together story set after Hogwarts, while the marauders are on a road trip. The writing was wonderful; copperbadge has a way of doing the whole marauders dynamic effortlessly. It felt cozy, with friends playing cards, talking, drinking, and just having fun together.

Author: wannnabesuper Rating: G Word Count: 7,437 Type: Non-magic!AU

Summary: Every time they meet, Remus gives Sirius a new ridiculous reason for having been on the cliff where they met.

Warnings: discussion of suicide, some homophobia

Comments: A strange, but charming, mix of humor and sadness. I laughed out loud at so many parts; the author really has a talent for dialogue. The flirting was great and so were James and Lily. The message at the end makes it a bit bittersweet, but it’s clear their future will be happy.

Author: the_gramophone Rating: G Word Count: 13,384 Type: Historical!AU

Summary: Ever since Sirius Black parted ways with his family, he doesn't see the point in attending Society events just so people can gossip about him. Until one day, he meets Mr. Remus Lupin, new to Town and possibly the most captivating man he's ever met. But what could he possibly have to offer him when he's lost everything?

Comments: This was just lovely. I am an unashamed lover of Pride & Prejudice, so this fic spoke to my interest in all the right ways. Wonderfully written, with a style and speech fitting the time period, no homophobia to speak of, and an adorable get together story. Overall a very charming, enjoyable fic.

Author: fluorescentgrey Rating: Mature Word Count: 15,104 Type: Magic!AU, Historical!AU

Summary: Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1692. "How oft have you eat and drunk your own damnation?"

Comments: Another incredibly engaging and richly historical AU by fluorescentgrey, this time set during the Salem Witch Trials. A perfect autumnal read, with its creeping sense of unease and haunting atmosphere. It’s striking, immersive, and gorgeously written, leaving you shaken and desperate for more by the time you finish.
