‘ it’s hot, ’  the tea, she means. it clatters loudly against the saucer as she sets it on the coffee table, and it makes her wonder why she’d bothered. some futile attempt at making trish think she’s got it all together, that her palms don’t sweat around her own cup, the steam from the boiling water fogging up her glasses as she brings it close to her nose to inhale.  

she scrambles to clean the glasses, chatting away all the while,  ‘ i have --- cookies. '  she’s placed two gingersnap cookies on trish’s saucer, just in case.  ‘ banana bread. anything you want. if you want. ’
