The same animation studio, making a spiritual successor to this show 28 years later:
THANK YOU FOR 1K FOLLOWERS ✿ 2024, sekaiichi-happy
fancy lala (akemi takada, 1998)
I was in a smaller tadc discord and there were people comparing the finale or shots of it to Revolutionary Girl Utena, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Grave of the Fireflies (Ghibli, this one was shots), Gravity Falls, and talking about how fun and lovely of a wrap up it was and how they wish Jax hadn't been abstracted and #girlpower about his "isn't she lovely" edit and.... literally if you say anything that isn't praise (I got I to a small arguement about how unsatisfying and thematically flat the episode was, not even touching the bigotry and fucked up nature behind the show) I got told I was I.agining things, too emotional, reading too much into things, being sensitive and criticizing the creative work of a very small minority and that Gooseworx hasn't made a big show before so i was expecting too much, just a bunch of that.
The moment I dared try to bring up the misogyny in the show (within a natural flow of the conversation) they said they wouldn't tolerate haters. Is this really what fandom is? Feels lowkey cultish. Gooseworx is literally just some person that made a show, the fanaticism with how people treat her is insane
Also, there's a lot of people sending you critiques and stuff but I wanna change that up and ask if you have any shows or games or anything that you'd want to recommend?
Why are people dragging Revolutionary Utena into this?? Like genuinely, what is the correlation?
Anywayssss...
So show recommendations! Well since we're talking, about girlpower and transfem representation I highly suggest for y'all to watch Fancy Lala! It's an anime that is free to watch Tubi, you can binge it in a day, and I absolutely adore it! It's also a magical girl series, and don't worry, nothing graphic happens at all. Fancy Lala is about a girl who aspires to be a comic artist, who comes across a magical notebook that lets her transform into her teenage persona "Lala". I think it's a hidden gem, and if you're looking for a pick me up then it's surely the way to go. Also the transfem rep is...goated AF.
Another good example of transfem rep in anime is for sure Tsubaki from Wind Breaker. I was very nervous seeing their character be introduced, and he remains to be in the background of the first season. But the second season is where they take center stage and it brought me to tears.
Moving past that...more shows I think people should watch are:
City of Ghosts (A short Netflix series about a group of kids investigating the spirits and ghosts that live in Los Angeles. It's for kids sure, but I do feel the education and topics they discuss are definitely things more people need to watch)
Samuel (Also on Netflix! A short series about a boy named Samuel growing up and writing in his diary every single day. Children that are written to be like children, but the writing is compelling.)
Unfortunately I don't have any game recommendations right now, I'm not finding too many games that I like to play right now. Might have to comb through itch.io again.
Bonney is basically that classic magical girl trope where the young lead gets a magical item that lets them transform into an older alter ego who represents their potential in the future.
I almost used the cowboy Momo outfit where she has a gun because I thought it was really funny, but then I found the one episode where she turns into a pirate, which seemed even more appropriate! 🏴☠️ (Ep. 54 of the '91 series if you're curious.) The magic wands were super fun to draw, but I did run into a problem where the version drawn in the series looked pretty different from the actual toy, so I referenced both versions a little 👍
