Jim and the boys of the Revenge 🗡🏳️🌈✨
Y'all know what makes me want to throw up? (In addition to, like, every other part of the clip?) How passive Izzy really is once he sees Fang is going to hug him. He tries to get Fang to back off with his sad little "I'm fine, unhand me" but once he realizes it's not gonna happen he just stops struggling. The same man who once grabbed Fang by his beard for daring to question Edward's orders makes no attempt to stop him from a supposedly unwanted hug.
He just tenses and whimpers like a sad little puppy, but he makes no movement to stop this from happening. He doesn’t look anyone in the face. He just lets Fang do whatever he wants to him. I mean, I know he's a submissive masochist, but he really looks like someone who has been conditioned not to put up any fight by the most traumatizing means possible.
And then Fang forces kindness and support on him. How much is this going to recontextualize what Edward is forcing on him for Izzy? I need him to see he can be submissive and still get good things.
Izzy is reciprocating the handholding i am so unwell
I’m beginning to suspect that Izzy Hands is overall a pretty chill person when not ignored and when his authority is not constantly undermined. His own dynamic with Fang and Ivan is relaxed. They are obviously his right-hand men, they tend to follow his orders but they don’t fear him at all. During the story time scene, Izzy, Fang, and Ivan are hanging out together in the shadows and the boys don’t hesitate to speak freely about Ed’s change in attitude. Even questioning if the plan to kill Stede was still up. Izzy just softly assures them that it is. They don’t fear violence from him and he rarely exerts any, beyond stabbing Stede in the duel and verbally insulting the Revenge crew trying to establish some authority.
Because Izzy never had any authority in the Revenge, and I do think it’s because of Ed’s strange attitude about the situation. First, it’s an invasion, but it quickly derails into a sort of pleasure cruise where the captains are just having fun. Izzy, Fang, and Ivan are left in a sort of liminal space in the Revenge, not quite part of but still having to be there because they are Blackbeard’s employees. Like Wee John is in no way impressed, not does he care for Izzy (and Ed too, I think. John does not give a shit.). The boys just integrate better with the Revenge crew because they don’t have a hierarchy of power to uphold.
Izzy is just walking around the ship drinking tea/coffee and trying to keep things running (I also don’t think he drinks alcohol, and if he does it’s not often and not much). Sure, he pulls on Fang’s beard like an ass but Fang does not care if Izzy sees him pissing around, nor does he hesitate to spill embarrassing stories about him. Ivan and Fang do seem to fear disrespecting Blackbeard but don’t hesitate in speaking clearly to him with Izzy’s backing, like in the no pets allowed scene in S01X06. So, it does feel like they know that Izzy has their back.
I saw a post going around and that now I can’t find, about how the crew didn’t really intent on killing Izzy after he became captain because of how shitty the knots were. And the more I think about it the more it makes sense and the funnier it is, because that is the exactly the kind of naughty they are. Fang and Ivan were all in and ecstatic at putting the fear into Izzy, ‘Boss, you’re a fine administrator but a shit captain. So take it down a notch 🥰✌🏽love you 🥰✌🏽 no hard feelings’. Izzy did go full silly as captain (we really underestimate how much of a muppet he is too). Afterward he is once again, going around drinking tea/coffee and trying to keep things under control while Ed is in his pillow fort. Fang and Ivan just fall back into the rhythm like 🤷🏽🤷🏽here we go again, I guess🤷🏽🤷🏽 .
Anyways, love Izzy and the boys. Iz just needs a proper vacation.
jim and fang very rough sketches, love these two!
Okay so I rewatched the movie Hook recently. The one with Robin Williams as Peter Pan. And for some reason my brain decided to go hey! Izzy was a lost boy!
So as a premise, Captain Hook of Neverland steals Stede’s kids. Izzy reads the ransom note and starts to remember his time in Neverland. Maybe he still has a bit of fairy dust that he keeps in a chest under his bed but he goes and tosses it around the sails to make the ship fly.
Everyone is fucking baffled. And when one of the crew stops screaming—because holy shit the ship is FLYING—they ask Izzy where the fuck he’s steering them. And we get the classic line of “First star to the right, and straight on til morning” which of course makes no sense to anybody.
It’s a bit of a rough ride, and Izzy ends up falling out, alongside a potential romantic of QP partner (personally my fav contenders for the spot is either Frenchie or Fang & Ivan together), where they end up with the lost boys while the rest of the Revenge ends up in Neverland’s waters.
Maybe put an extra spin on it that Izzy starts to look younger the more time he spends in Neverland and starts to forget his life in the outside world except for his partner, because “Neverland makes you forget.”
Alma was the one who ran away from Hook because she is not dealing with that dude’s bullshit, but all his words about parents not really loving their kids really gets to Louis. So Alma runs into the lost boys. Izzy doesn’t quite remember anymore that she and Louis need rescuing, but the other crew member still does. But Izzy takes her under his wing, because why should boys have the corner market on being lost? Alma thinks he’s the coolest guy ever because he lets her use a sword and wear pants and get dirty with all the other boys.
Really I just want this to end in an epic fight where Izzy can show off his fencing skills and inflict psychological warfare on Hook with Stede’s pocket watch that he had nicked at some point earlier and taunt “Lookie lookie, I got Hookie!” And the other lost boys chanting “Israel, Israel” like they did for Rufio. Also for Izzy to have forgotten Blackbeard/Ed at that point, wondering why the fuck this hairy pirate dude and his crew are calling him “Izzy” and acting all familiar with him.
But basically I just want Izzy to be cool and confident and a little magical as a lost boy, while still having the angry/protective older sibling energy. And maybe it’s the partner crew member he got lost with who helps him remember and convinces him to come back, if at all.
I love that when Wee John walks in on Lucius sketching Fang to let them know “the boss” is looking for them, Fang briefly freaks out at the implication that Blackbeard — which by extension would also mean Stede — is back, but Lucius doesn’t even look up from his sketch. It’s possible that Lucius — who we’ve seen is very good at keeping time — already knows that it can’t possibly be Stede & Blackbeard back already, but I’m choosing to assume that Lucius just straight up is not worried about Stede’s reaction should he walk in right now. Lucius is expecting Stede to walk in and be like, “Did you remember to put down a towel first like I asked? Alright then, carry on. And I must say, that is a stunning likeness.”
