Tony Stark was less than pleased to find out Peter Parker was average.

Painfully average, really. He had a perfect 50% in his last 8 tests. He was… well, he was almost too average.

So, Tony looked into it. Discovered that on one of his tests, the kid answered every other question correct. In another, he answered the first half correct and the second half wrong. It didn’t make any sense - the kid was answering questions in the first half and then unable to answer basically the same questions in the second half.

Tony thought he had him, when he saw a pattern. He thought he’d caught him in the act, purposefully controlling his grade.

But his pattern changed and suddenly the kid got a 48%, the answers seemingly all over the place. He was annoyed, frustrated, and confused when he asked FRIDAY to check for any sign of a pattern.

He didn’t expect her to come back saying the kid had managed to answer his test by writing in morse code.

“Well, what does it say?”

And FRIDAY hesitated. Honest to god, hesitated, before finally saying, “It reads ‘leave me alone you stalker bitch’.”

And Tony…

Well, Tony is thrilled.

Midtown high school was the highest performing school by a sheer margin.

Tony Stark couldn’t help himself but fawn over some of the essays these kids were writing on complex Mathematical concepts. It was high level stuff, things he hadn’t even thought about.

So he contacted the kids, offered them internships, and they were all fucking useless.

No one knew the names of their essays, never mind the ideas. He figured it out pretty quick, of course. Someone was doing their homework for them.

He imagined some disgraced scholar who needed money for a project and had enough spare time to take it on - embarrassing but it made sense.

He didn’t expect some 15 year old delinquent from the worst school in queens who swore at him when he showed up at his crumbling foster home.

Peter Parker was not what he expected to find.

Tony is thrilled.

Peter less so.

Tony Stark was an asshole.

It was like a fact of the universe, really. The sky is blue, grass is green, and Tony Stark ruins everything he touches. He was used to it, by now.

Still, sending the kid away was hard. He didn’t want to, of course. In all honesty, the way the kid made him feel was fucking terrifying. In the lab, making jokes, smile lingering just a second too long for his own comfort.

He had chased him away for his own good. Peter would be better off without him. And he was. He was getting straight A’s, joined the robotics club and Spider-Man was better than ever. The kid was happy, without Tony.

And sure, Tony drinks most nights nowadays. Yes, he’ll drink more of the news reports on another successful day for Spider-Man. Of course.

But then something pops up, and the only person with the skill set to help Tony is Peter fucking Parker. And Tony doesn’t want to, shouldn’t, really. But he doesn’t have a choice.

So, he gets dressed for the first time in months, grabs his fastest car and waits outside midtown with sunglasses on and a flask at his hip.

Peter spots him straight away. He comes barrelling forward, as if he was running up for a ruinion that Tony didn’t want. Kids were watching, and as Peter came nearer Tony shuffled awkwardly. He didn’t look quite as happy as Tony expected. He almost looked-

Peter socked him in the jaw.

“You’re a fucking asshole,” he growled, opening the passenger door and getting in without another glance in Tony’s direction.

Tony looked up, touching his cheek as if the bruise had already formed - maybe it had. Kids were staring, muttering, whispering about him.

He got in the car, gripped the wheel and opened his mouth to speak.

“You say one more word and I’ll break your jaw this time.”

Okay. Good to see there’s no hard feelings.

Richard Parker liked black jack.

Peter remembers sitting at the dinner table late into the evening, a cigarette between his father’s lips and a deck of cards in his hand. He taught Peter the rules, made him play, bought him ice cream when he won.

Peter doesn’t like thinking about what happened when he lost.

The point is, they felt like a family. It was just them, playing a game. That’s what other kids talked about in school, the kids whose mothers weren’t dead. The only time Peter remembers his father being proud of him was when he invited some friends around and Peter beat them all to oblivion.

Richard ordered pizza that night.

So it was not surprising when Peter developed a gambling addiction young. He was eventually taken from his father and placed with Ben and May, but it was hard to stop himself from thinking of cards every time he saw a quarter on the street.

He got through it, mostly. He tried convincing Ned that it was fun, but Ned didn’t like the way Peter got genuinely angry. He didn’t like the way Peter would keep pushing him to bet more.

And it fizzled out. Mostly because he didn’t have a choice. May found a betting app on his phone and quickly got Ben to change the Wi-Fi setting so they were all blocked. He was far too young to enter a casino and his best friend didn’t want to.

Enter Tony Stark. And Tony was having a party, and the party needed a theme.

Vegas.

And Tony jokes that he’s allowed $10 to go wild and when it’s gone, it’s gone.

And from that night forward, Peter feels like he’s back at the kitchen table, betting his savings from the piggy bank just so his father would look at him. And he doesn’t want his father to ever stop looking at him.

So he decided to never stop playing.

My dad’s attempt to fix a wounded relationship is rly horrible. He just sort of sits me down, acknowledges the event and just simply ‘checks’ if things are okay between us???? Like, what???? He even told me he wasn’t going to apologise. He still tried to shift blame to me and was all like “It’s an adult thing”, “It’s complicated”, “It’s not right or wrong”, “You won’t get it”.

Yeah, even if I don’t get it, why about communication???? And honesty???

Like, if you can’t even dumb it down, then your communication skills must be pretty damn shitty then. If other parents can keep their kids informed, than why the fuck can’t you?

And oh, my dad has this great excuse he uses for everything. “I’m not god. I’m human, I make mistakes.”

Congratulations! You found the ultimate excuse for everything. You can avoid all responsibilities as a father because you’re human! You found the wildcard!

Fuck me in the ass and call me a toy. I mean, pffffft, yeah! Of course! Better me finding out on my own and drawing my own conclusions than you telling me the big picture, right? :DDDD

Great conversation I had with my dad. It consisted of awkward eye contact and eye contact avoidance, me shrugging and saying ‘It doesn’t matter’ and him going on about wtv bullshit he has to say.
