Anton Walbrook is on peerlessly maniacal form as the obsessive gambler dying to know the secret of an elderly countess (Edith Evans), who has sold her soul to win at cards. An underseen treasure from the perpetually-underrated British master Thorold Dickinson, for my money this doesn’t quite match the claustrophobic perfection of his 1940 Gaslight, but it’s the next best thing. - Tim Robey. The Telegraph (2009)

Rotten Tomatoes reported that 95% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 21 reviews, with an average rating of 8.09/10.  Wes Anderson ranked it as the sixth best British film. Martin Scorsese has described Thorold Dickinson as an underrated director, saying of The Queen of Spades that "this stunning film is one of the few true classics of supernatural cinema."
