To paint in four dimensions, I tessellated squares with octagons. These I drew with a series of rulers that became progressively shorter as they moved around the surface. I made a collection of rulers of different lengths, exchanging them as I went along, and discovered that following a shrinking rule rigorously led to a recalculation of pi.
