[sheydgarden]

FEYGELE, 2020.

a sheyd (Jewish demon) inspired by two major stylistic influences, Leonard Baskin & Aubrey Beardsley, and also by the #AugustAdiPOSE & #FatArt hashtags on Twitter. the title/text “feygele” is a Yiddish word meaning “little bird” often used as pejorative slang for a queer person – here also playing off the figure’s size & the bird-like attributes of sheydim in folklore. a queer/trans fat Jewish aspiration!

paired with the poem “sheyd” from my chapbook:

commanded, as you are, to love the stranger,

must you not also be a refuge

to the strangest who reside among you?

call us in from the corners, we little birds

who sing in unfamiliar tongues: our cries

also reach heaven.

though our prayers take different forms

we too are people of the book;

we too keep our covenants, in the 

twilight places where we make our homes.

I just learned that the Yiddish word פֿייגעלע feygele (literally: little bird) is a slang for gay people. So I came up with this idea: in Yiddish, butterfly means  זומער־פֿייגעלע zumer-feygele (literally: little summer bird) and since buttlerflies are also a symbol for being trans I hereby proclaim zumer-feygele as a Yiddish slang for trans people :)

The latest reason why I am a terrible person and you really shouldn't associate with me: due to the extra syllable inserted into BTS's pronunciation of, "Fake Love," I can't help singing it as, "fageleh" (or faygele, feygeleh, feigele, etc, however you want to spell it).

Right, okay, clearly you are missing the point of my first askbox message, because I'd strongly suggest there is a difference between "properly" and "archaically", particularly in the context of producing popular music which presents Yiddish as a living language rather than a historical curiosity. This is not turning out to be a productive discussion.

you don't think their usage of the word makes sense? cause it makes sense to me. i also think words have, like, more than one meaning, dude. so, i don't see how that's archaic, or how the main corpus of yiddish popular culture can be archaic if it's only ~70 years old.  if a new culture is to be built, it should probably pay heed to its precursers.
