Mer au fic sorta Little mermaid esque
Anyway Bilbo was a mer, but Lobelia wanted his territory, it was sheltered and abundant and all around a good territory.
And seeking this tetritory she went to a sea witch, Gollum, and asked him to remove Bilbo from the territory, Gollum did so, cursing Bilbo with legs.
Bilbo finds himself suddenly choking on the waters that once gave life and ends up being taken abord a ship as a shipwreked man. They assume that Bilbo has amnesia and that's why he doesn't understand/know normal human/land things (humans and elves are land creatures, hobbits and dwarrow are sea creatures.)
Fast forward several years later and Bilbo has a place in a small Inn as a cook when he's brought a mer in a tank, the idea is to cook him for the patrons but Bilbo convinces them he'd be more useful as an attraction, this is so Bilbo can find a way to help the mer escape.
But the mer is guarded very well but Bilbo has to feed him amd learns his name is Thorin and how he got captured.
Thorin is wary of Bilbo, a land creature that looks at him in sympathy and longing but know a variation of seaspeak and knows what he eats as well as he does.
Thorin learns to trust Bilbo and eventually Bilbo has a plan and manages to get Thorin out and on a ship to the open ocean.
Bilbo hasn't been on a ship since he left the one that fished him from the sea and so he's having feelings about being home but unable to truely go home.
Eventually Thorin tells him that they are close to where he was taken from, Seacreatures know the sea and can always find their way home.
So Bilbo goes to release Thorin, knowing he'll never see him again, Bilbo spent years searching for a way to undo his cures and never found anything, he cannot go with Thorin, no matter how much he wishes he could and a lifetime sailing is not enough for stolen moments.
In a digny in the dark of night, only the full moon for light, Bilbo helps Thorin into the ocean, his family popping up to surround him in joy and relief.
Bilbo is glad for him, he really is, because that's what love is, letting someone go even if you can never follow.
And Thorin swims back to offer his thanks and farewells, he too wishes Bilbo could come with him, but a mer's kiss is only temparary and would not last more than a moment.
But, Thorin is selfish, he wants that single moment and so he kisses Bilbo, intending it to last only long enough for Bilbo to meet his family in the ocean they all belong to.
Only, Bilbo seizes after the kiss, shaking and glowing until it fades, leaving behind a mer's tail where his legs once were.
Thorin's kiss broke Bilbo's curse and Bilbo gets to return to the sea he was born to and he and Thorin live happily ever after ruling the Dwarrow kingdom of Mers.
Notes: I'm thinking that Dwarrows are social and Hobbits are loners coming together during mating seasons, Bilbo changed because of his time with land creatures, he's more social now but still gets into solitary moods.
Bilbo was picked up by Elves, they sail more than Humans do. Orcs are pirates. Thorin was captured by pirates and sold to Humans that were going to eat him.
