My take on Fiddauthor is filled with nuance. Fiddleford chose to marry Emma-May, and I don’t think we recognize that enough, and the implications that has in regards to this relationship.
So, enjoy this one-shot of Fiddleford inviting Ford to the wedding. (Might make it a two parter if you guys want to read about what Ford’s feelings are and his experience during the wedding.)
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
I pull into the dimly lit parking lot, nothing above my sedan but the glow of a flickering street light.
I stuff my hands deep into my pockets, doubling the action as a moment of warmth, but also to hide my trembling, shaking ever so slightly as my knuckles scrape against my crisp, new jeans.
I haven’t seen Fiddleford in one year and seventy two days.
Not since graduating early and beginning the work with my grant.
I narrow my eyes as I glance around the lot, hoping to find his rusting truck. I kept my eye out for it to be parked backwards with the headlights dimmed, the same way it’d always idled when we’d share a joint late at night.
Animal House. I can’t believe I’m entertaining this garbage… a movie, let alone, a comedy.
I suddenly feel the warmth of headlights hitting my back, and my backside is soon met with a light brush from the hood of his truck, in threats to hit me, laughing as he hangs out from the window.
My back stiffens before I clear my throat and my cheeks flush, blood rushing into my finger tips.
“Watch it, you idiot.” I manage with a soft grin, the lids of my eyes already hooded just at the sight of the peeling white paint of his pick-up.
Fiddleford opens the door and steps out, his boots connecting to the cracked pavement with an echo.
After he slams the door shut, a shit eating grin at his delicate lips, he also stuffs his hands into his pockets while shrugging his shoulders.
“Yeah, well— you’re alive, ain’t ya?” He smiles back.
I shrug with him.
“Sure.” I hum, but as much as I’d try to hide that tone… that damn tone… it slipped.
I watch Fiddleford’s smile flatten, a slow nod coming from him to imply he’s accepting that response as he continues to move on.
“Thanks for comin’ tonight.” His tone matched.
I feel my face flicker with confusion, but I quickly look to the ground to cover it up.
“We should head inside.” I follow suit and move on, too, throwing my head in the direction of the theater entrance.
I got us a shared popcorn, two separate soda’s, and I was even grabbing the tickets. I used some of my grant money for this. I wanted to use some of my grant money for this.
“How’s the valley?” I ask as we find a good set of seats.
Fiddleford opens his chair of choice, six rows up from the front row, four seats in.
“S’fine. Movin’s a bitch, but… closer to you. Emma’s already decoratin’. She’s got a real eye for that.” Fiddleford says with a look I’d never seen before.
At least not from him.
“That’s… yeah. Closer to me.” I mutter a touch solemnly.
“How’s Gravity Falls?” He asks.
Do I tell him about… any of it? After not speaking to me for so long?
“It’s fine. I had a cabin built, been working on a lab.”
A red head sitting behind us leans in closely with a finger pressed to her lips. She violently hushes us, some of her spit dusting my skin as I flinch.
We both instinctively sink back into the cushions of our seats, closing our mouths at her demand, but not before snickering.
The movie was admittedly entertaining, our pinky’s laced at the top of the popcorn by accident, but we let them rest almost the entirety of the showing.
Which leaves me feeling even more conflicted as we reach our vehicles, a silence looming.
It felt awkward but, he also seemed happy.
Was he leaving Emma-M—
“Stanford I’m— I’m marryin’ Emma.”
The grip on my car key tightens and my stomach drops deep within me, a wave of nausea sinking under my skin.
My back remained to him as I stared carefully at the inside of my palm, sweat pricking at the notch of my neck.
“Stanford?” I hear him ask, his voice quiet.
He felt a scene coming, and to be perfectly clear, I wanted to cause one.
“I haven’t seen you in over a year. When I do, it’s for this?” I ask with a bitter taste in my mouth.
“Stanford, please…”
“Please what?” I ask, turning around.
“…I want you at the wedding.” He says firmly, his voice unwavering despite my clear panic.
I laugh this off with a cold attitude, running my hand through my hair as I continue with that same bout of aggression that I seemed to currently have an inability to control.
“Of course you do.”
My breathing starts to quicken as a pain begins swelling in my chest. The pain is tight and constricting, causing a soreness to ache between my shoulder blades, a hardened pulse beginning to beat in my hands.
Congestion pulls to the corners of my eyes and as I narrowly manage to refrain from crying, a desperate sound comes from me, something that pleads, but I bury it down just as quickly as it arrives.
Fiddleford just watches me, and I feel as if I’m under a microscope.
So small.
His expression isn’t sour or judgmental, instead it’s filled with fear and loss.
“I can’t watch that. Do you understand what you’re asking of me?” I question with strain.
“I do.” He responds softly, like a coo, and I hated him for looking so upset.
How on earth could he be upset?
“So that’s it? This was the last night I get to—“
“You get to what?” He interrupts with a sharpness.
I furrow my brows in disbelief, surprised by his bite, like he had any place to be angry.
“Be with you.” I truly didn’t think I had to say it.
“I’m askin’ you to come to my god damn wedding, Stanford!” He yells and steps closer, not allowing for me to back down from this conversation.
“You know damn well that’s not what I’m saying!” I raise my voice in a whisper with distress.
I can feel the pooling at the water line of my eyes.
“Please…” I whisper again.
Fiddleford frowns, taking my hand,
“I can’t.”
I throw his touch.
“Don’t fucking do that.” I choke, sucking in air as I try to swallow the lump filling my throat.
“I need you there. I need you to be happy for me.” He pleads softly.
“I can’t…” I answer with a stiff jaw before continuing, “did I mean nothing? Did all of it mean nothing?”
“You don’t know my family, Stanford.”
“I know damn well. I know them… and I know from experience that you don’t need them!”
“That’s you, Ford! That’s you. You can go without your parents, without Stanley, but do you even remember what lovin’ ‘em was like? I can’t do that, Ford. I don’t know what I’d do without ‘em.”
I ignore his accusation, bringing the focus back to his family.
“They wouldn’t even like you if they knew who you were. Deep down. So why the hell should you care about them?”
Fiddleford’s face contorts with offense.
“Just because your family’s a fuckin’ mess—“ he starts.
“Mine?! Just mine? Really.”
“I’m not askin’ you, Stanford, I’m tellin’ you, this is done. It’s been done for a long time and I think you know that.”
My jaw remains clenched as I stare at him.
“That’s it?” I ask after a few beats of silence.
“That’s it.” He stands firm.
My chin quivers as my frown deepens, a soft heave escaping me before I try and recover by bringing my knuckles to my mouth, but at this point it feels uncontrollable, the urge to cry.
I can’t believe I’m letting it happen, I’m letting the tears start to slip through my fingers.
My flesh is soon exposed to the cut of my teeth as I cradle my index finger between them, trying to hold myself back, but it doesn’t stop me from sobbing.
It became more and more guttural, but I try to remain quiet even though I felt hysterical, like I was losing my mind.
I’m losing him.
“I love you.” I beg.
He sighs.
“I love you, too, Stanford, but, love ain’t enough for the trouble it would cause. Emma is a great girl, and I love her, too, it ain’t just about us.”
“You never let it be!” I begin to grow defensive.
“Because it can’t be, you know it, I know it! I don’t—!” Fiddleford pinches the bridge of his nose.
“Ford, I don’t wanna yell. I don’t wanna fight. Please just come… please. I can’t do it without you. You’re still my best friend, my rock and I can’t—“
“I’m not enough.” I interrupt with a hiss.
“I didn’t say that.”
“Love ain’t enough. I’m not enough. That’s what you said.”
Fiddleford chews on the inside of his cheek.
“I have the balls to do it, I did it, and you can’t accept it. That ain’t gonna fall on me.” Fiddleford starts, his hand on his chest.
“You know it’s wrong. You know I can’t. You knew this whole time I couldn’t. We shouldn’t. So why are ya makin’ me feel like the bad guy? You don’t think it hurts me? You don’t think if I could be with you that I would be? This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but for once I’m tryin’ to have a back bone, I’m tryin’ to do the right thing, and you’re makin’ it damn near impossible! I can’t do this.”
“You talk about it like it’s something to be ashamed of.” I scoff.
Fiddleford groans, and it’s evident he feels he’s been speaking in circles.
“It is, Stanford! It is.”
The anger I had felt at beginning of this conversation began to come forward again, my sobs soon halting as his words ring in my ears.
I take a deep breath and wipe my tears, the sadness continuing to pull at my features as that sinking feeling deep within my stomach turns into an almost stoic replacement.
Fiddleford digs into his corduroy jacket, pulling out a textured envelope before he tries to give it to me.
I hold my hand up to reject it.
“Stanford—“
“I’m not going.”
“Please.” Fiddleford’s voice suddenly cracks.
I don’t know what hurts more.
I shake my head as I look into the sky to collect myself, and… I give in, refusing to cry again as I rip the invitation from his hand, but something deep inside me was inevitably severed.
This was a feeling I wasn’t sure I’d ever know again, or want to know again.
I didn’t want to feel this ever, ever again.
“I don’t know how you could do this to me.” I remain level in my words.
“I’m sorry.” Fiddleford whispers.
I pull open my door and slide into the drivers seat, shutting him out with the sound of my starting engine.
I toss his wedding invitation onto the passenger side before making a three hour drive home.

((And yes, even with this headcanon, I believe Fiddleford is still the one to yearn most during the construction of the portal, and I actually feel like this headcanon explains in part of why Ford is so dismissive of Fiddleford’s feelings going forward.))
"Death... robots? Now hold on just a tick, I build robots, sure, but they ain’t meant for killin’!"
"...Well, leastways not when it comes to folks, anyhow..."
ooc: They're not intended to be lethal, but the robots he can make are very much lethal. A steel spinner robot at 30lbs could very much catch a body or a very severe injury if you aren't careful. Why would Fiddleford make such a thing? Because Graviton's engineering students have their own "battle bots" esque event every semester to put their skills to the test. It's about as destructive as you'd expect.
Best part of it being that it's a team event, and he's not the only one working on that little slice of insanity. He managed to rope the other three into it(Stan: driving the robot; Ford: Co-engineer; Bill: Programmer)! This is just an example that Ford and Fidds brainstorming at 3am powered by nothing but caffeine and sheer will isn't always a safe idea.
