Rosa
Tyvek
As regular visitors to this blog might remember, my house is up for sale. So far I've given away two roses but they were in pots. The three roses in today's post are too deeply rooted to permit transplanting so, unfortunately, these roses are probably destined for the bulldozer. I've had multiple showings but, so far, no one seems interested in keeping the garden.
My little house is under 1400 square feet but the new place next door is probably well in excess of 4000. As you can see, this 'monster house' is up to the Tyvek (building envelope) stage. Next comes paint and siding. I have a contest going with my friends to bet on what the finished color will be: beige or gray. From what I've seen in my neighborhood, only these two colors are permitted in new houses. By the way, I've put a dollar on beige. It's such a 'woody' color.

For real though, a Tyvek-6mm foam-Tyvek sandwich makes an incredibly tactile quilting material. It’s not slippery like you might think, feels fresh, but not cold and you can easily wipe off the inevitable ramen soup droplets with a wet cloth.
Winged Wheel - Cactus Club, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, May 12, 2025
They were awesome to begin with. But Winged Wheel seems intent on just becoming more and more awesome as the years go by. Now a sextet with members of both Water Damage and Sonic Youth in the fold, their second LP Big Hotel from 2024 remains in constant rotation, a perfect blend of motorik experimentalism and hazy melodies.
As you can see from their pedigrees above, these are very busy musicians with an array of other projects — so a tour is a rare and special thing. And saints be praised, the mighty Milwaukee Taper was on hand to record a sparkling tape of Winged Wheel earlier this month. The jams run free in fine fashion — it says something about the considerable chemistry between the players here that the exploratory 11-minute improv might be the high point, as Steve Shelley takes everyone to one beautiful plateau after another.

Listed: Outer World — Part 1
Outer World is the psychedelic partnership of Traci Wilson (of Dahlia Seed and Positive No) and Kenneth Close (also Positive No), born when Wilson had to work her way through the changes that long COVID forced in her singing style. In her review, Jennifer Kelly called the title track to their debut album, “a hands-in-the-air, hips-on-a-swivel psychedelic bop along the lines of Os Mutantes’ ‘Bat Macumba.’”
They've provided us with a supersized Listed, saying "We just completed the final show of spring dates and it feels like we should share some of the things that were playing in the van relating to the cities we traveled through." The second part is here.
