Not sure if I already sent you an ask (I'm chronically online so hours feel like days to me) but if I did IGNORE ME please omg. But I would like to know your opinion/thoughts on how the PJO/HOO depict (or don't) the demigods' trauma. Because I feel it's lacking for all the stuff they've gone through. I'm not expecting Rick to write like pages of PTSD (that's what fanfiction is for 🙏) but a little inkling of their issues would be nice. A sentence or two. I'd love to hear your thoughts ^_^

YES YES YES!!!! I GET TO TALK ABOUT TRAUMA!!!

Oh my fucking Gods, let’s chat.

(I’ll start of with PJO, then I’ll move onto HOO :3)

So I know that the entirety of PJO is seen in Percy’s perspective, but I really wanna talk about Annabeth; here’s why:

Annabeth, (as we learn in HOH) has a very reasonable fear of abandonment, the PJO books are a bit hazy for me since I haven’t read them in totality, so please correct me if I am misremembering or mixing up my own headcannons with canon!!

And we learn this through the experiences she tells Percy, how her Mother (Athena) abandoned her on her Father’s doorstep, no knocking, no telling Fredrick he now had a child, just left. (The way she described her early childhood days with her dad to me, it read as her being neglected by Fredrick since I don’t believe that he ever wanted her in the first place; but I could be wrong; whether his actions were intentional or not is still up in the air. I know Annabeth makes a cameo in Magnus Chase, when Magnus remembers playing with ‘Dominoes’ along side Annabeth in a closet, but she was dead set on running away by then at the ripe age of six.) This abandonment only metaphorically grows when Thalia dies on the crest of Camp Half Blood, intentionally sacrificing herself, but also unintentionally abandoning Annabeth (I absolutely stand by Thalia’s sacrifice, and understand her reasoning for what she did; I also believe Annabeth knows this aswell, but she was only seven; she had every right to grieve.) , and then Luke leaves, abandoning Camp as a whole, with Annabeth not understanding why.

So that’s 3 out of 4 caregivers who either unintentionally or intentionally abandoned Annabeth, and let’s not even talk about the fact she met this kid (and developed a crush on, which we find out in -I believe- MOA) who she knows is destined to die, but still becomes friends with regardless.

Not only in her first quest does she face her biggest fear in large (mechanical spiders in The Thrill Ride o’ Love), she (kinda) gets stretched (Crusty’s Waterbed Palace), nearly turned to stone (Medusa’s), fights all three Furies at once alongside Grover (bus to NJ), goes to the Underworld (Hades), nearly lives inside The Lotus Casino forever, and watches Percy escape Death’s grip too many times. In one quest. Oh and she had to burn her own funeral pryer because at that point some of her siblings believed she wasn’t coming home.

Most of those events come just from The Lighting Thief, and you mentioned both PJO and HOO so I’ll try to keep it short for HOO

First off, Annabeth I believe should have been either more negatively impacted or even distant to Jason. I will say this now, I absolutely love Jason and his entire character and I absolutely adore the friendship they create and I absolutely believe they would be / are great friends; but having that fucker be a blonde-haired, blue-eyed, tan (for a white person) skin, and a SCAR ON (I believe) THE LEFT SIDE OF HIS FACE???? Bitch if I were Annabeth I would have thrown. hands. Doesn’t matter who, but somebody would be catching these fists with their face.

Imagine, a while back (it was only last year) you fought a war (you were basically second in command) that’s been building up years, the person that raised you, betrayed you and you watched him writhe, bleed out, and die in the Throne Room of Olympus, oh, and did I mention he stabbed himself??? With your knife??? Well he did. And you were sixteen. (but take into account that Annabeth only turned sixteen a month before the war, and the transition in mindset takes a lot longer than a month, so still have some resemblance of a fifteen year old) Oh and it gets better, you know that face that’s probably been haunting your dreams for a year? While looking for your missing boyfriend (who is basically your tether and had a tendency to get in death defying situations) you come across a kid, who you thought was going to be your boyfriend, but instead is some random kid WHO LOOKS JUST LIKE YOUR NOT RELATED OLDER BROTHER WHO KILLED HIMSELF INFRONT OF YOU LAST AUGUST. Oh and don’t worry about the two other kids who when you bring to camp get claimed as children of HEPHAESTUS AND APHRODITE (just like the couple that cheered you and your now boyfriend on but died in the war you fought together before they could see you two get together)

And that’s just Annabeth’s first meeting with the Lost Trio.

Both those series as a whole are a bit foggy for me, and I’ll dust myself up on them, but if you wanted me to delve in any certain parts or characters of PJO and / or HOO I would be very happy to!! :3
