Your heart banged so loudly against your rib-cage, you were sure Izuku could hear it…despite the fact he was on the other end of the classroom. Cheeks flushed and your bottom lip caught between your teeth, you desperately tried to calm the bundle of nerves that pulsed through you at the sight of your oblivious, broccoli-haired crush.
After a weak and useless attempt, you dragged your eyes to sneak a glance at him. “How did this happen,” You mumble quietly to yourself, watching him talk colourfully to Iida and Uraraka. “Why can’t I say a damn two wor-”
Immediately, his face broke into a bigger smile and he excused himself from his two close friends. Then, to your horror, he began squeezing passed desks in a path to where you stood.
WHY IS HE COMING THIS WAY!? You thought to yourself in mortification. Frantically, you neatened up your hair, feeling the familiar flight of butterflies flutter around in your chest. Oh God not now, I’m going to make a complete fool of myself!
“Morning, Y/L/N-san!” The freckle-faced boy beamed at you, his smile as wide as ever. “Are you ready for the English test first period?”
Your mind frenzied into a dead blank, barely letting his words hit you. Instead, you were overwhelmed by how close he was to you, how he strangely seemed to have a slight sakura undertone to his scent and how his pink lips looked so kissable in this very moment-
“Y/L/N-san?” Izuku ripped you from your little crush analysis, tilting his head cutely as he patiently awaited your response. “Did you hear what I said?”
You blinked, snapping yourself from the trance he held you in. Gaze falling to the ground you tried to collect yourself. “Um,” Your hand hurriedly raked through your hair. When your sight lifted to his, you felt your heartbeat race all over again. He looks so cute…! “Uh…” You were sure your face could start a fire with how hot it had instantaneously become. This is a disaster.
Izuku, on the other hand, couldn’t quite work out why you seemed to be in another world. Was it something he said? Were you not ready for the English test? His eyebrows furrowed, lips bowing to a pout. “Are you okay, Y/L/N-san? If you want, I can go over some of the words with you?”
At the mere thought of being privately tutored with Izuku, your body went into overdrive. “Actually,” The worlds were spluttering themselves out of your mouth. “That won’t be needed, I…I um gotta…” Your gaze flickered to the door. “I gotta go!” And without any more of an explanation, you found yourself dashing out the door.
“But wait!” Izuku called after you, worry coating his voice. “Where are you going?! Class is about to start!” Though, it was too late, you were already out of sight. His shoulders slumped. What did he do wrong? Did you always get nervous before tests?
“Tch,” Bakugo snickered behind him, feet resting on top of the desk in front of his. “Just leave her alone, shitty Deku, she was probably trying to get away from you.”
Normally, Izuku was used to this – Bakugo’s nasty jabs – but what if he was right? What if you really were trying to get away from him…?
The next few days didn’t help his case whatsoever. Every time he’d be near you since that morning, you’d quickly excused yourself from his presence and ran off. Eventually, Bakugos’ words started to haunt him and he started to really wonder if you didn’t like him.
One particular afternoon on the walk to the dorms after school, Izuku had spent the entire day trying to approach you, yet he was unsuccessful every single time. The failure had put the green-haired boy in his own world for the past few minutes, muttering to himself every possible reason for your avoiding of him.
“Deku?” Uraraka spoke up, offering a look of concern over to her friend. “You’ve been like this the whole day, what’s wrong?” She brushed her brown locks away from her face with a frown. She hated seeing her usually-vibrant friend so dull. “Is it the whole thing with Y/N? Because if you’d like, I can talk to her.”
Izuku glanced up, heaving a sigh of defeat. “I don’t know, Uraraka-san…” He chewed on his bottom lip, running his train of though through his mind one final time. “Maybe she just doesn’t like me.” He gives her a sad smile. “She always freezes up at the sight of me, her face goes all red and the next thing I know she’s running the other direction.”
Uraraka stopped walking, her eyes widening at the realization. How did she not think of this sooner!? “What else does she do, Deku?”
Izuku was yet to figure out why Uraraka seemed so eager, but he complied. “When she first started it, she stuttered a lot...seemed like she was in another world – like she didn’t want to be there talking with me.” Admitting it aloud only pained the boy further, still at a complete loss. “…Why?”
That was all the confirmation Uraraka needed before her face lit up in triumph. “Come on! You have to talk to her!” She presumed her walk, practically dragging the confuzzled boy behind her.
“Huh, what? Why all of a sudden?” He questioned, letting himself get pulled eagerly by his friend. “Will she even want to talk to me…?”
Uraraka turned to flash him a confident smile. “Trust me on this!”
That was how Izuku found himself outside your dorm door, nervously fiddling with the end of his cream-white shirt as he pep-talked himself into knocking on your door. What if you shooed him away? Or worse…slammed the door in his face!
By the time he finally mustered up the courage, his fingers wouldn’t stop trembling as they hovered against the door face. Luckily enough for him, he didn’t even have to knock in the door.
All at once, the door flung back and he was greeted with your face of horror as you slowly registered his stance before you.
“M-Midoriya!” You spluttered, grappling for the door handle. “What are you doing here!?” Per usual, your heart thumped, palms secreted sweat and face flushed all on cue.
Izuku was terrified, suddenly being thrown into the deep end before he had the chance to gather his thoughts. “I’m here b-because…” Stuttering through his sentence, he willed himself to man-up goddammit! He wasn’t about to let you slip away again! “Why don’t you want to be near me anymore?! Why won’t you talk to me!?” The world tumbled out of his mouth without a second thought, his eyes squeezed shut in anticipation.
You stood there silently for a few moments, before you let out soft sigh. You knew you couldn’t run nor hide from him forever. It was time to face your feelings head on…even if that did mean rejection… “Izuku,” You used his first name, dropping the formalities that you’d picked up from nerves. “I’m…I’m really sorry about all this…”
Slowly, Izuku opened his eyes, losing his nerve-wracking fright. He didn’t dare interrupt, letting you take your time to explain, gaze locked with yours. God was he glad you were talking to him again.
You ran a hand through your hair, brushing it to one side. “I should’ve never acted like that toward you,” Swallowing hard, you willed yourself to continue. “The truth is…” Here it comes. “I c-couldn’t talk to you or…or say anything to you was because I…” The ‘like you’ finish of your sentence dissolved into thin air, nerves eating your words alive. I can’t do this! He’s going to reject me and laugh at me and, and-
“Y/N,” He used your first name too, one hand now placed on each of your shoulders. “You can tell me anything. I’m your friend, right?” It was as if the world melted away, his emerald eyes boring into your own. “I want to be there for you.”
His musk was intoxicating and you forced yourself to focus on his words and not get lost in him all over again. What am I thinking? This is Izuku, he’s not going to laugh at me or ridicule me in anyway. We’re friends. A small smile etched at your lips, skin burning at his very touch as the words finally passed your lips. “I like you, Izuku.”
It took about three or four seconds before Izuku’s own cheeks turned a tomato shade and he pulled away in surprise. “Wait what!?”
Was this real? Was he dreaming!? There was no way…no way you liked him. Was that why you were avoiding him? His mouth opened and closed like a guppy, unsure of what to say. He should go on and confess back right? Seemed fitting…the whole reason he was so paranoid was because he liked you so much; he didn’t want to lose you.
You, on the other hand, felt uncomfortable at his bewilderment, now regretting even opening your mouth. Yeah this was a bad idea, he’s going to-
Izuku couldn’t help it, he let a giggle slip, covering half his face with his palm in embarrassment. Paranoid for nothing! “I like you too!”
This time it was your turn to go into a state of shock, face practically burning as you stared at him in disbelief. “You do!?” Butterflies bustled around in your chest, yet this time they somehow felt…different. A smile spread evidently across your lips.
He nods, face emitting the same enthusiasm yours does in that moment; matching eager beams, dusty rose cheeks. “Yeah,” He barely managed to contain his happiness; one word not close to enough. Gingerly in the spur of the moment, he reached to hold your sticky palm in his, never breaking your gaze. “Yeah I really do.”
