so, six of crows fandom, especially anyone in the matthias/helnik tags: block and report @fjerdanpatriot. and stop giving this dude attention.

this is not “alternate timeline military history” this is someone taking REAL imagery from american invasion of afghanistan and using it to cosplay fake fjerdan nationalism for a fictional fascist military state from a ya series.

first of all, he clearly has not read the books. he’s a wiki tourist scraping lore and feeding it into ai. the second i pressed him on actual fjerdan worldbuilding, he started rambling about “RFDF” and “special forces” like this is his little fake nato server. he doesn’t know the lore. he doesn’t care about the lore. he just found a military faction and started projecting his own politics onto it. he’s literally making american propaganda edits, using fanmade nationalist symbols stolen from reddit (because there is no canon fjerdan flag, let alone a red one) and trying to wrap it all in “ace combat” and “military history” language so people stop questioning it.

and the way he talks about matthias is genuinely disgusting. he’s trying to frame matthias as some nationalist martyr who died for a military uprising, which is the literal opposite of his entire character arc. matthias didn’t die for “fjerdan patriotism.” he died for his friends, his conscience, and the person he fought so hard to become after unlearning the hatred fjerda fed him. turning him into a recruitment poster for fake nationalist military propaganda is insulting to the character.

but the worst part, and i need everyone to actually understand this, is that his ravkan war edits are made from real war and invasion imagery. he is repurposing photos and footage from the american invasion of afghanistan and the soviet-afghan war to cosplay fictional fjerdan nationalism in a fantasy fandom. real people suffered and died in those images. those are real modern war zones, not free aesthetic material for some trump supporting military bootlicker to slap a fake fjerdan flag over and call lore.

this is a military fetish account using our tags with right wing propaganda, stolen narrative and design, ai slop, fake lore, and open disrespect for the actual themes of the books. he doesn’t care about matthias. he doesn’t care about fjerda as a critique of indoctrination and war crimes. he cares about the patriot aesthetic.

keep this shit out of the matthias tag permanently. i would rather die than let a maga dude into the matthias tag.

i wish we could’ve learned more about matthias’s family before they died, so here’s some headcanons of what they were like:

papa helvar was big and burly. his hair was brownish-blond and going grey, and he had stubble that never fully grew into a beard. he would lift matthias onto his shoulders, even when he started to grow older and bigger. he taught matthias how to whittle and carve wood. he was kind to every creature, and often would be seen nursing small animals back to health. he took pride in his small vegetable garden. he hated the druskelle. he loved sheep.

mama helvar was tall and muscular. her hair was long and so blonde it was almost white. she would sing matthias lullabies and tuck him into bed with a little stuffed wolf every night. she would chase matthias around the house, and when she caught him, would shower him with tickles and kisses while he squirmed and complained through giggles. when she was pregnant, matthias would give her massages and bring her little gifts of flowers and food and stay by her side as long as he could get away with. she called him “mattie”. she loved wolves.

baby helvar was small for her age (i read a fic once that named her clara, and ive called her clara ever since). she was very vocal, always squealing and giggling and babbling until she learned to talk, and then she was always talking. she was always cold, and hated snowstorms. she adored matthias. they were best friends, even though she was seven years younger than him. they had the same blue-grey eyes and white-blond eyelashes. she loved jumping on matthias, trying to tackle him, but he never fell. she was best friends with the neighbor’s daughter, who adored matthias as well. she loved foxes, but was afraid of their screams at night.

matthias helvar headcanons

has a huge amount of affection towards any animals

pulls out a crouching position and 'pspspsp' whenever there are cats around, you'd never believe that he was a trained druskelle for the way he acts around cats, he's a huge softie

although he wouldn't admit it at all, during the planning phase of the ice court heist, he revelled in sleeping in, for the first time in his life, even if he was hesitant to around nina and kaz

can braid hair really really well - when he had his long hair when he was a druskelle (before hellgate ) he would braid it often

when on the outside he pretended to be scared of nina being able to speak fjerdan like a native, he thought it was really attractive, and for the first while of knowing her, got quite flustered when she would

when him and nina finally moved in together, he would make sure she was warm every night - often with a horse blanket :)

in hellgate, he would sing songs in fjerdan to go to sleep and try not to think about nina

he really likes to journal, but since he is so afraid of people finding out about his feelings, he uses codenames for everyone in it, and if someone finds it and asks him about it, he denies and denies

gets up absurdly early in the morning - even earlier than nina, because thats what he has been trained to do since he was so young

has a insane tolerance for alcohol, and it takes him at least four drinks to get tipsy at all

has a suprisingly nice voice in compare to nina - but doesn't sing very often, nina only realised when there first son was born, and matthias would sing him to sleep

is very soft for children, as he knows what its like to not feel cared for, especially considering his backstory

gets really anxious initially when he moves to ravka with nina, as for a long while, he often got horrible stares from natives, who would sometimes even spit at him

found a way to bring trassel to ravka, and trassel ended up loving nina, even if she was grisha

has lots of scars, especially one on his shoulder from when trassel bit him as a child, but won't let nina tailor them away as he sees them as reminders on his body

loves giving nina little pecks on her lips when he walks past her, and is very very affectionate

is so protective of his and nina's son (haven't figured out the lore for that quite yet) and taught him how to fight

when he gets drunk, he's really playful and droopy, often giggling a lot and leaning over nina

when he gets sick, he is insistent that he is not, and he pretends that he's not, but nina immediately knows when he is, because he stays his distance from nina

holds his breath whenever druskelle come into ravka

calls nina every pet name under the sun, but if the other crows are around she's just nina, but he's very very affectionate when its just the two of them

likes to tell their son life lessons through retrospective stories about his own life, - like persistance through nina surviving the withdrawal phase of jurda parem, and family through him leaving the druskelle for his new family - the crows

spends a lot more time with kaz as he gets older

One of my favourite little details in Six of Crows is that throughout the book we have this growing tension and build-up surrounding just how the Drüskelle execute Grisha and we never get a straight answer, not even when Nina directly asks Matthias if not a pyre then what and gives examples (including firing squad and gallows) and Matthias deflects the answer. At the time we think little of it because of the heat of the moment and the high tensions surrounding the argument, plus we’re still fresh from the pyre scene, but ultimately Matthias never actually answers this question because he does not know the answer.

And he does not know, as we learn in chapter 35 straight from Jarl Brum’s own mouth, because they don’t, at least in the typical sense of the word, actually execute the Grisha; for the past fifteen years they’ve been torturing and experimenting on the Grisha prisoners found guilty during the trials.

Anyway I’m tired so I’m not gonna let this post get too much longer but the point is that I think the fact Matthias doesn’t even know the answer to this question is one of the many things that keep him questioning the manipulation he was put through early on in the book and I think that to a certain degree the solidification of every tiny doubt he had in chapter 35 told him not that he was going to turn on Brum, because he already knew he would do that for Nina, but that he was making the right choice for himself by doing it too

Fates of antagonists in Grishaverse:

Jan Van Eck: Imprisoned (possibly put in an asylum).

Pekka Rollins: Lives a rich lifestyle with his son somewhere.

Tante Heleen: Her brothel went out of business. Lives a rich lifestyle, possibly started a new business somewhere else.

Previous King of Ravka who bankrupted the country, did nothing but rape servant girls: Sent off to live a rich lifestyle while he still can (shortened life because of his sickness).

Previous Queen of Ravka who did nothing but spend money and only protected her favourite servants from the King. But later removed her protection from Genya and let the King rape her: Gets sent off to live a lavish lifestyle in sunny Southern Colonies.

Jarl Brum, a genocidal maniac, who revolutionized Grisha hunting, made new weapons, new strategies, new training systems just to hunt down Grisha in every corner of the world to kindap them, dehumanize them in countless ways, experiment on them and later kill them. The man who either killed Grisha after a sham trial or drugged them until they died, who forced Grisha women to get pregnant over and over while drugging them, the man who bombed Ravka's capital, who draws satisfaction from their suffering because he thinks Grisha are vermin and insult God by existing: Gets spared multiple times and later loses his rank. Because apparently, he's "only a product of the system and Fjerda made him that way". As if he wasn't the main force enforcing that system, as if he didn't brainwash children and made them make killing as many Grisha as possible their life goal.

The Darkling who fought for basic human rights for his people for centuries, made a school and a law to keep Grisha children from getting sold off and slaughtered and to give them education, placed older Grisha under the protection of nobles since Grisha were still formally King's property, didn't send unprepared children to the front lines like the First Army did, dealt with threats from Fjerda and Shu Han, kept Ravka functional even with the Fold separating the country: Gets killed by a bunch of schoolchildren and deserters who haven't even seen real war, his centuries of work gets erased and his name is more demonized than ever. In his absence, the Second Army is in shambles, the economy collapses, Grisha get kidnapped off the streets and get experimented on and dehumanized, Fjerda bombs the capital, the protagonists can't figure out any measures to ensure Grisha will be safe in their own country. Later he gets brought back to life only to be forced to clean up the protagonists' mess, makes Zoya a saint, gets made fun of because the narrative (the author) magically solves centuries of prejudice and genocide for Zoya to be accepted but shits on his attempts, gets eternal suffering while being fused to a tree as a thank you.
