Mirror of Adonis Wondrous item, uncommon
This beautiful handcrafted mirror was created by a powerful wizard and gifted to their lover. The wizard’s love was coveted by all and the wizard battled many to keep his love close. But one day when the wizard was called away, his lover was killed. The only thing that survived was the hand mirror. In his grief, the wizard passed the mirror onto another, but not before placing an enchantment on the mirror, intent on keeping anyone who holds it safe.
Eyes in the Back of Your Head: While the Mirror of Adonis is on your person you can use a bonus action to speak the mirror’s command word. When you do so a ghostly hand appears and grabs the mirror. The hand will hold the mirror in front of you, allowing you to see behind you. While the hand is active your enemies gain no benefit from flanking you. The hand will last for one minute.
A creature can use its action to try and pull the mirror out of the ghostly hand. They must make a successful DC 14 Strength check to be able to grab the mirror.
Once the mirror has been used, it can’t be used again until you have spent an hour gazing upon your reflection.

Historically, how would armies prevent or counter flanking?
The first and easiest way is to have a terrain feature that cannot be passed to prevent a flanking attack. This could be a mountain or steep ridge, a lake or wide, fast river with no ford, an impassable canyon or gorge, or so on. This is called “anchoring” the flank, securing the flank of the line so it can’t be attacked. Other terrain features that are difficult to pass through can be used as an anchor, such as difficult swamps or forests, but this runs into risks when an enemy finds a way to successfully navigate the terrain hazard. In this case, place skirmishing troops that can break up an advance and provide early warning to the main line.
Without this, cavalry was the primary means to both launch flank attacks and defend against flank attacks. In historical battles during the Second Punic War, a cavalry engagement that successfully drove off the enemy horse and wheeled around was key for the successful engagements of Cannae or Zama. If the cavalry was inferior, it was often the role of the senior and most accomplished infantry units to repulse flank attacks, leading to the traditional deployment of the strongest unit on the right flank.
Formation of the line was also critical. Better-trained, more accomplished units of men could adopt an echelon formation, where the units are placed in echelon to each other with what appears to be exposed flanks as bait. The echeloned units remain out of action until the lead unit is engaged on the flank, in essence, baiting a trap with an ‘exposed’ flank. The flankers engage and are then counter-flanked by the next unit in echelon. If a unit on a line feared a flank, the line would angle out at a right angle, creating a wholly new battle line to engage the flankers; this is called “refusing” the flank. This could lead all the way to circular or square formations, used as anti-cavalry formations to help protect the flank. These square formations became the famous early modern pike squares and tercios. The ability for an infantry unit to go from line to square or from square to line quickly and effectively in response to changing battlefield conditions was highly-prized and demonstrated a high level of training and unit cohesion.
Thanks for the question, Anon.
