The term focalization is used in modern narratology for the kind of perspective from which the events of a story are witnessed from the constrained perspective of a single character. Events observed by a traditional omniscient narrator are said to be non-focalized. In The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien, the collection of stories are being retold by the character Tim O'Brien. We are only given his perspective on what these stories, some of which were told to him and all of the stories lead to him to reveal, but inability to say that he was responsible for Kiowa's death.
