✤ Foliose Lichen - (Specific species unknown)

Leptogium gelatinosum Rose-petalled jellyskin lichen,  rose-petalled vinyl lichen Happy Thanksgiving, American friends! In honor of of the traditional Jell-o side dish I have come to expect on this auspicious holiday, I present you with . . . Jelly lichen! Yes, this is Lichen a Day’s first gelatinous foliose lichen: L. gelatinosum! Why is it a jelly lichen? Because, well, look at it. Glossy, squishy, thick, perfect. It is typically reddish to dark brown when exposed to sun, and bluish-gray in shade. It is thick-lobed with that weird smoothly-wrinkled upper thallus and uneven to smooth margin. It tends to grow in a round cushion 2-5 cm in diameter on moss growing on rock, soil, or tree bases in basic environments. One of this specie’s most defining features are the adorable concave apothecia almost always found in abundance on the surface. Basically, i just wanna poke L. gelatinosum and squeeze one of those tiny, pudgy apothecia. Really badly. Follow for more daily lichens!

Aside from being weird and beautiful, this species is the first lichen to ever be designated as a “state lichen”. The state is California, for the record, to no one’s surprise. Thanks, California Lichen Society.
