“Anyway, not everything’s settled for sure, y’know?”
“Sometimes things can change unexpectedly on you, but other times you can change things up yourself.”
“Take this fella I met in the Crucible the other day. Thought he was real slick, had the match good an’ tied up. Jumpin’ around, surprising everybody, shots slippin’ off him like rain through the leaves.”
“Thing is, he was only winning ‘cause he went in thinking he was better than everybody else, thinking he couldn’t lose. Thing is that ain’t never the case.”
“So I get tired of him being cocky. Start watching his jumps, get a feel for his rhythm, and wait till he comes for me. After a minute he spots me, looking down the sights of my lance, and hops my way. Trouble for him is I got the timing of his zany approach. He comes in thinking I’m looking to shoot at range, but as he leaps up too high to see what I’m doing, I swap out to this hose here. He comes down thinking he’s gonna rain some death, but he meets just a right spray of bullets. Now I’m not the sharpest shot with a piece like this, but I dump a whole mag at him before his feet touch the ground in front of me, and my fist finishes the job. Could almost see his surprised face through his helmet.”
“Pretty good, but you still lost, right?”
“Yeah, the other team had too much of a lead by then.”
“Point is that jumpy bastard hardly took another shot for the rest of the match, and he damn well didn’t hop up at anybody all pushy-like. Just sayin’ I managed to shift his perspective, change the flow of the situation, you know? Even if we still ended up losing, I managed to change it up first, and it was no longer a foregone conclusion.”
