Spring time is usually Plant Monster bf’s favorite time of the year. He feels so painfully dull during the winter months when his pretty flowers all wither away and fall off due to the cold. During that time he’s just a bunch of carefully wound branches huddled beneath blankets and mugs of warm drinks to keep him from being so chilly.
You tell him he’s just as beautiful as he was during summer, but he just doesn’t feel like himself. So when the first signs of spring appear on his arm in the form of sweet little flower, he can’t hold back his excitement. More than ready to be beautiful again and filled with all sorts of blooming buds.
This will be your first spring together too. You don’t even know how lovely and breathtaking he can look. The two of you met last year around the end of summer and just in time for a lovely fall. He remembers how he almost cancelled your first date because of how his leaves were already starting to fall. But he went anyway and he was so happy he did.
Instead of turning away from his falling leaves, which happened on the date too much to his dismay, you embraced them and thought them just as beautiful. Expressing your love for the season as you picked up the leaf and asking if you could keep it. Back then you surely didn’t know the significance of such a gesture. Now the leaf stands proudly on display, a sign that you’re his mate.
Wanting to share the good news of his sprouting he rushes throughout your home looking for you. When he spots you sitting out on the balcony he brightens, shining more spectacularly than the sun.
“My love, my love, come look at this!” He shouts in excitement, body buzzing with renewed energy. The sight of you, his eternal sunshine, only increasing it tenfold.
You turn around to face him just as he sticks his arm out to present to you. A gasp of your own delight leaves you as you see his very first flower appear. And as you do you inhale a giant whiff of it and immediately begin sneezing uncontrollably.
Plant Monster bf goes from ecstatic to downright panicked. He flounders around trying to help you, wondering what’s going on that’s got you like this. It isn’t until you’ve stepped away and managed to stop sneezing that you bashfully admit to your pollen allergy.
“But you’re dating me. A plant monster,” he deadpans, sticking up his single adorable flower.
A blush paints your cheeks as you can only laugh in response.
“You were too cute to say no to,” you shyly admit as if that explains it all perfectly.
He hates how much that line works on him. Without his permission his branches soften as his body looses his tension. It’s ok, he can work with this. It’s not an issue at all. He loves you and is willing to do whatever it takes to stay by your side even during this time of the year.
For the next couple of months Plant Monster boyfriend does everything he can think of to be near you, to simply just try and kiss you.
At first you try allergy medicine. Basic first attempt, why shouldn’t it work? The two of you inch closer and closer together and everything seems to be fine. He tries so hard to reign in his excitement.
But the moment your lips gently brush against his, about a couple dozen flowers immediately bloom across his branches and a heavy cloud of pollen perfumes the air. Which then makes you crash into another fit.
Another one of his countless attempts includes placing air filters around your home, thinking if you could clear out some of the pollen as well it could help your system calm down. After you finish you go to stand side-by-side, beaming with pride as you look around your home.
You smile brightly at your boyfriend as the air conditioning turns on— and sends a sudden of pollen right into your open mouth. You sputter out pollen, rushing for a nearby sink and rinsing out your mouth as your bf freaks out about accidentally killing his mate (you’ll be perfectly fine).
In a last ditch attempt your boyfriend goes so far as to find and wear a hazmat suit. He walks up to you looking like some strange, but still sexy, looking alien type creature. As soon as he gets close to you his excitement once again gets to be too much to contain. But this time instead of flooding the room with pollen it fills his suit. Sure, it’s a little harder to see you now, but at least he can remain close.
Without thinking he leans in to kiss you… only to be stopped by the glass screen separating you. The abundance of flowers that have grown on his body droop sadly. Needing his own personal sunshine to truly flourish, not whatever dull star sits outside and lights up the world. You light up his world and he needs you.
In his anger thorns burst all across his body and tear the suit to shreds, exposing him and all his pollen to the air. Before he can cause you anymore pain he rushes outside, hating all this distance but doing it anyway because of how much he loves and adores you.
“What else can we do?” He asks defeatedly, slumping down onto the floor and causing all the surrounding plants around him to fall too.
“We’ll just have to wait,” you say with the same amount of longing in your voice as he holds in his.
The days seem to drag on as you technically form a long distance relationship between you and your boyfriend. While you can see each other as often as you wish, the distance between you remains and it causes an ache like you’ve never felt before.
When the day comes that pollen season is officially over and it becomes more easily manageable for you both it’s like a scene from a movie. The two of you dramatically (and in slow motion) running toward each other. Joyous looks on your faces as you crash into each other and tumble onto the ground.
Plant Monster bf’s branches curl around you, protecting you from the fall. After you stop you end up right underneath him, smiling breathlessly at his mirroring expression. The energy between you is charged with so many things unspoken and so many things that weren’t done together during your time away from doing anything besides clinging to each other.
You’re not sure who’s leaning in first, you or him, but all that matters is the space between you is finally disappearing. Yet just as your lips meet you flinch back in an adorable sneeze. Your boyfriend’s face crumples in despair but you just giggle.
“Guess there’s still a little too much pollen in the air,” you say through your laughter. But your boyfriend finds absolutely nothing about this funny if the pout on his face means anything.
“We should stop then,” he grumbles, already sulking and trying to soak up all of your touch he can.
But the idea of parting from him is too painful to even think about. Shaking your head even at the thought. To which your boyfriend looks at you strangely. With another laugh you explain.
“Nah. I don’t care anymore,” you say and lean up to capture his lips in a long awaited kiss.
And suddenly nothing else mattered besides the way his mouth moved and his heart intertwined with yours.
