I have now made a tag for the nysm ttrpg idea so that will be listed in the tags below. For those that do not have the patience, the tag is nysm ttrpg ♠️♥️♣️♦️
I am using the Kids On Bikes System as my jumping off point while developing this, but things may change. The current working title is CONS WITH CARDS. This also has a tag.
Now a few questions and ideas for those that have been discussing this in the comments with me.
I think I have a list of the Character Tropes down.
Each character would have their Main Trope that would be their focus, and a Secondary that allows them to develop other talents. There might have to be a Third space to learn an alternate Skill as well.
How I'm thinking of it at the moment, each Main Trope would have a Skill Tree like set up where the player can learn and develop a new Skill that is relevant to their "main class". Whether or not this would have two different branches with similar/different talents is currently up for debate.
With Secondaries, they would have the option once they reach a certain point on their main Skill Tree, to select from another Trope's Tree instead of advancing on their own. Secondaries (and Thirds if they happen to exist) might require higher success rolls. That might be left up to the GM.
There is also the question of if Secondaries (and Thirds) could be lost/switched out over time (see the Jack example below). If this is the case, they may have to spend a "level up" reclaiming that Skill instead of advancing on their Main Trope Skill Tree. This also raises the question of how many "level ups" Secondaries (and Thirds) last before having to be relearned.
Please do share opinions and ideas on any of this post.
TROPE
The Chameleon - example: Dylan, Charlie
The Slight - example: Jack, June
The Decapitator - example: Lula
The Showman - example: Danny, Bosco
The Mentalist - example: Merritt (and Chase I guess rolls eyes)
The Escapologist - example: Henley
A few examples of how I think this would work with a movie character:
Jack has Slight as his Main Trope. He’s grown up on the streets (fannon, but let’s be real, we all agree on this) and knows how to steal. His Secondary going off nysm2 would be Mentalist as he has learned and developed things from that Skill Tree. However, going off nysm3 he no longer has or uses this Skill, so it might not be something that lasts unless it is maintained.
Dylan would have The Chameleon as his Main Trope. He's the planner, the leader, one might even say "the brains". He's able to live behind a mask for thirty years while working for the FBI. (Charlie is also a Chameleon, he just blends in differently. This again raises the question of Skill Trees having two different branches.) Dylan's Secondary would be Showman. He's a Shrike. It's in his blood.
I am planning on looking through the Leverage Core Rulebook (thank you @assertivesalamander for suggesting it!) for how they divided Tropes and how (if at all) those might transfer over to this type of gameplay.
If anyone has ideas on how they might set up a Skill Tree for the Main Tropes (specifically Mentalist cos so much as thinking about is hurting my head), go ahead and give me a holler. Be that in a reblog, in the comments, or in the ask box now renamed "Cons With Cards Ideas".
Hope to hear from whoever wants to help. Let's Robin Hood some shit my fellow Horsemen!!!!!
Okay, so this is just my bag now. The printing is beautiful and feels sturdy af. I have adjusted the artwork to pop the hand out from the background a little bit more. I love being able to print my art on things. It's such a cool and rewarding feeling.
This lovely tote is up in my shop.

the worst part of reading a new ttrpg is finding something that is so perfect and so much fun to roll around in your brain with the sickly prickly knowledge that there will be no one else to play this with or run it for you
You're gonna be the one to run it and no one else will be able to do it for you
so everyone is talking about how fun daggerheart is to play but PLEASE SOMEONE tell me how it feels to run because I KNOW i will have to run it to have a chance to play
Taking a short break from running TTRPG campaigns to prep my next campaign while one of my players runs something of their own.
No one fucking told me how hard it would be to stop GMing for any period of time. It's not even been a week since I finished running my Dragon Age campaign and I already fucking need to start running Coriolis Mercy of the Icons, which I won't start until July.
Why the hell did I agree to this?
I'm out here spreading anti-WoTC propaganda (running half decent TTRPG system that aren't streamlined solely to make money and instead have actual love and care and not soulless monetization and AI art in their sourcebooks) to the masses (like 5 people at my public library)
