this is probably old man yells at cloud, for me to bring this up in the context of the “nobody has any boundaries ever” weewoo show, but:

yes. buck has trouble with boundaries: his own, other people’s. that’s what happens when you’re a feral kid. you don’t learn that shit when other people do. that’s complicated by being neurodivergent, and reading other people differently than most people do. (the author is neurodivergent & ascribes to the adhd/neurodivergent of some sort!buck headcanon because it’s hella relatable, so that’s the assumption this post makes).

we’re all constantly learning where our edges are; the neurodivergent & traumatized among us, especially so.

he’s getting better at knowing where the edges are: not only other people’s, but his own. recognizing where he can responsibly push a limit, and where it veers into the danger zone.

but: he’s also oblivious, to himself (alexithymia, among other phenomena bisexuality), and in regards to others’ cues and sometimes even clear speech.

he needs to know with certainty where the lines are: his own, as well as others’.

eddie has his own boundary issues, which i will get less into here, but they’re somewhat complementary to buck’s. they’re the sort of boundary issues one develops as a parentified child of a controlling, manipulative parent and an absent parent. while buck doesn’t know what he wants to be when he’s young, eddie has the sort of gaps that have him clueless that he can be anything he wants to at all in the first place.

there is understanding here, but there is also great potential for conflict.

in the context of 8x09, i see their conflict in large part being about boundaries. eddie rightfully feels that buck is violating his boundaries, but he’s actually misunderstanding which boundaries are being violated. buck is violating eddie’s boundaries in multiple ways, but eddie is not communicating his boundaries, or which ones are actually being violated because he doesn’t actually know, in himself. he’s misunderstanding what buck is doing, and buck is spinning out the more he feels like he’s losing control and can’t get traction.

maybe it’s just my buck goggles. i could very well be wrong. but i think the root of this problem is that, once again, eddie is not communicating where the edges are so that buck knows where they are. eddie himself maybe doesn’t know where they are, not really. & i get it. it’s frustrating. it takes spoons to do that shit even when you’re not trying to uproot your life halfway across the country.

but if you know your friend is Like This. if you know he’s well-intentioned but oblivious and also likes to Fix Things. it’s a kindness to remind him that you don’t need him to fix this. it’s a responsibility to speak up when he crosses a line.

the thing is, if you still struggle with the basic concept of being a person, of having an autonomous identity, of knowing where your own edges are, it’s really heckin’ hard to do that.

i don’t think the show will ever truly go into any of this. but i think about it a lot. and i’m thinking about it now.
