Aside from Alex, Winn was the most important person in her life. He understood her, related to her. Winn being in her life helped her overcome her internal battles, and she never felt isolated or alone with him by her side. So, why was it difficult to tell him how she felt? We are too. Those three words haunted her. But his kiss— that kiss… Why was she scared to stop him that night? She wasn’t afraid to protect National City from danger, but she was afraid to tell Winn how she felt. Now that Winslow Schott Sr was back in prison, Kara decided she couldn’t let her feelings stay hidden. Despite finding the courage to confess her feelings, Winn was nowhere to be found. Panic filled Kara as days turned into weeks, but that all changed when she discovered a new musical spotlight for The Newsies, and the main actor was Winn himself. The missed calls and texts left unanswered confirmed her suspicions that he had run away, and it seemed he had taken on a new identity in the process. 

Within seconds, Kara bought a ticket for the show that night and flew to New York in what she hoped would be a happy reunion. From the beginning to the end of the performance, Kara smiled in her seat as she watched her best friend. Once the show came to a close, Kara excused herself before the curtain call and used her superpowers to sneak backstage and hide in his dressing room. While she wanted to confess her feelings, Kara was more concerned about how Winn was doing after what had taken place in National City. 

Her concern for his well-being and her feelings for Winn made her pace about his dressing room. She was not about to fly back to National City because not only did she need to tell him how she felt, but Kara needed answers as to why he left— if he was okay... Hearing the sound of the door to his dressing room open made her stop pacing, and she took a deep breath. “I didn’t realize you wanted to be on Broadway someday.” Kara greeted him with a small smile. “H— hey, Winn. It's been a long time."

a tiny bit ironic, given the name and concept — @torntruth and mary-sue smith, who is a fascinating deconstruction of the mary-sue trope. i am lowkey obsessed with the idea and the character, and just ???? everything about her is so interesting and subversive and ugh. fantastic. Aphelion also plays a bunch of other amazing characters (canon and oc both!) so absolutely check them out! they also have a fantastic wonder woman @ofthemyscira so follow there, too bc yes.

from afar, hmmm. @forthewinn qualifies, i think, alas. we used to write together waaaaaay back in the day on my main blog (@ofcrossrcads)! one of my oldest (and still beloved) mutuals, from way back when i was primarily hanging out in the dctv rp scene! i will never get tired of creeping on erika's threads and aesthetics and stuff. i don't really go there anymore, but winn was my crossroads demon's first real human buddy, and he'll have a special place in our hearts forever <333

Leaving DC was weird at first, boarding a plane and going somewhere just for herself felt wrong. Like she was breaking some kind of rule. It's strange, she can withstand being held at gunpoint, she can shoulder the trauma of everything her job throws her way, but the idea of spending some time alone with herself makes her feel like her heart is going to explode in her chest.

She talked to her superiors that first night when Winn was in the hospital, when she stepped out and gave him some space when his parents came to see him. Her boss made it clear that Sarah should've stayed on leave for longer than she allowed herself to. And that time off, and mandated counseling, are heavily encouraged for the path moving forward.

She had one condition, she stayed in DC until Winn was discharged from the hospital. She didn't want to just disappear into thin air again. She was there when he checked out, walked beside him on his way out to the car. Seeing him, knowing they were both taking the first steps on the path to being something better, to becoming healthier people, made this all feel a little less frightening.

She gave him something before they said their goodbyes. Her phone number. He had a number for her before, it was out of necessity, but that was her work line. This was her personal number. She knew he'd have security with him twenty-four seven, he'd be safe, he wouldn't need her protection. But she wanted him to have it, to have a way to get a hold of her in case he needed her. The voice in the back of her mind told her it was a pointless gesture, that it'd probably go unused, but she gave it to him anyway. Just in case.

She left DC for three months. She shacked up in a cottage in a small European town. The population was low, therefore limiting her chances at human interaction. It had WiFi, so Sarah could attend her counseling sessions, and a cell signal that was spotty at best.

She thought she'd end up going crazy alone in that place, that she'd come back early and spend the rest of her sabbatical hiding out in her apartment. But she didn't. She stayed the whole time, committed to getting better and not just running back to familiar habits. Taking the time to heal was something of a foreign concept to her, but she thinks it was for the best.

She came back to DC with a clearer head, feeling lighter than she has in longer than she can remember. She was almost worried about coming back to work, fretting over the idea that she may fall back into old habits and patterns that she worked hard to recognize and start to break. But so far so good. She's been back for two weeks and it's felt like smooth sailing. A few familiar faces are missing, she hasn't seen Casey roaming the White House halls. She hasn't walked by Reyes on the phone with his boyfriend. Which means Winn isn't back in DC yet.

Part of her is worried about seeing him again. About what it's going to feel like to be in the same room with him. But she doesn't have too much time to dwell on it. She's been back in town for two weeks when a difference in her schedule pops up. A gala, black tie, some of the president's detail are dressed in their typical secret service attire, others, such as herself, are dressed to blend in with the crowd.

She's at the bar, holding a champagne flute filled with ginger ale, watching people enter the ballroom. She nearly drops her glass when she sees Casey and Reyes enter the room. A few seconds later, her eyes snag on the person who walks in behind them. She watches as Carlos does a cursory scan of the room, notices the moment he sees her, and then he whispers something in Winn's ear. Her breath catches in her throat when her eyes meet his, and then she's crossing the ballroom, meeting them in the middle, before her brain can even fully register that she's moving. "Hi."

"Not too long." Supergirl hummed, watching the other closely. "--I didn't know where to bring you, so I brought you to....my place." Her place. Meaning the Fortress with at least ten superbots running around. Kal was going to kill her but...Winn was important. As important as Lois was to Clark.

Benji's eyes slowly dragged over towards the other, falling on the younger man as he heard the words. It was something that he generally avoided; asking for help. He would simply put on a smile, a mask of his own making, and act like everything was fine, even when it wasn't. And right now, he was very far from fine.

"Thanks, mate." Benji replied, a weak half-smile coming over his lips. "They're making me see the counsellor at HQ, put me on mandatory leave while they assess if I'm fit to return to the field. Not my idea of a good time, really." A humourless laugh escaped him and he shrugged his shoulders.

Billy was ready. He was totally ready. He was prepared, okay? He'd used enough magic that his crown had started to appear, he could feel metal on his forehead as he fended off this 'Silver Banshee,' backed her up in a corner. He wasn't even sure where the gun came into play. Some henchmen? Was that a thing in these parts? But the bang came and he felt nothing. He just saw the back of Winn's head, this brown, neat hair, tucked in shirt -

and then the man was crumpled on the floor. Billy fired off some magic, crossing his arms over his chest and throwing out a blue blast until everyone left standing hit the walls and were down. He ran over, yelling. "No! NO! No-no-no, stay with me, why would you do that? Siri, call 911!"
