Future Selves/Then and Now
You ever see the future versions of your current friends or people you knew today? These future people of your friends or past acquaintances even look like them except older, laugh at the same things and post photos of the type of people whom they had pictures with as their younger selves. The same people who give themselves credit for the achievements others have done the work for are still doing it today. The same people who were obsessed with penguins are still obsessed with them today. The same people who were statist/prejudiced about their heritage or where their blood is from - holding themselves above other nationalities are still statist/prejudiced about it today. Those who worked out back then are still working out. The people who did not understand or pay art any attention or hold what they do as more ‘important’ than other people’s choices - again - do not get it.
I think I identified my future self a few years ago. I recently seen that my future self had recently been RVing out in California/Arizona and either painting or drawing - living easy, living inspired by self and adventure🌺 Living with gratitude to have overcome obstacles of old and to have bloomed regardless of having grown up through the crack of a concrete garden. Those things are exactly what I would be doing as the future me, and it is funny as I was traveling the west desert coast a month ago and had discovered my talent with painting in the middle of last year. They are doing these things - no, correction - WE are doing these things - WE are happy, and are finding the magical moments in everyday life.🙌
I believe and feel that I find my current self to be as free as my future self due to not holding onto any past fiascos or shit-hitting-the-fan scenarios from way back when. I have had many of those shit-hit-the-fan cases in the past and with growing up, but I think because the scenarios were numerous is why I do not cling to any of them or try to ‘sell myself’ with any of them - I do not have to because I am way more of a being with what I myself do and create than any past thing that happened to me or around me. For example, some people out there who may have had one thing happen to them in the middle of a carefree life without worry of how they are going to afford things might have a higher chance of clinging to that one thing than I would. They might even be more prone to having what I call ‘wound contests’. The #MeToo movement is not a wound contest and should not be manipulated to have such. I am a woman who can relate to #MeToo and that remembered event was only one of the reasons why I could not travel across town the way others would have liked me to for years, but I grew more aware of public safety while also realizing that it was not my fault. I say this now due to feeling braver over time and having the know-how to protect myself in the world. Friends of mine then did not even know about this, as I felt I could not tell them for it was a time where victim blaming happened often and it surely did not help. I was more sure than not that the victim blaming would have happened because some people enacted upon me in the realms of other things. I did not even care if others thought me not taking the bus back when was ‘unambitious’ or that they would just assume I was lazy just so I did not have to tell them about what happened to me to avoid the victim blaming that I knew they were wrong for. I have heard the word ‘Ambitious’ used like a sword so many times that I personally feel like it is too judgey of a word to use for describing or not describing another, and should be reserved for the self. Eventually, I had overcome this one obstacle in my own time and not on someone else’s. It is never a good idea to compare your wounds to others or think that yours are somehow more important that you should be telling someone else what to do. Albeit, certain types of trauma in life can be the exact thing nightmares are made of and would make every bit of sense as to why they are hard to forget. There are all kinds of cases out there. Some people do makeup trauma in order to sell or have their craft noticed, but that in itself is another kind of trauma held within. What someone recalls from their own experience can also be quite different from another experiencing in the same time/place/scenario along with them for many reasons - reasons beyond the mind.
Another thing I have been noticing about the future selves of people are certain types of fears. One of the fears I have been noticing lately in some future selves of people is their fear of ‘being a nobody.’ I find this quite interesting as I would often recall the younger selves bashing fame or mass recognition in fields of art such as acting, singing, painting, etc. Also, no field of art is higher than another as those who try to statize the importance of art often have an obsession with statizing all kinds of things. Anyways, I feel like these same people might feel this fear of ‘being a nobody’ more as their older selves partly due to the growth of social media use, of course, as maybe they never took the time to see the reach of social media or social media as a business tool before. Also, if they never really nurtured their artistic sides all of those years I can see how they would feel like they did not make the most of their time here or feel that they are ‘out of time’ for becoming who they wish to be.
In saying all of that, I want to say that it is never too late to art. Also, never think that your age should dictate your art medium. Just because you are older does not mean that clay, paint, or crayons are out of the question - not at all. Just because you are older does not mean you have to pigeonhole yourself into drinking only red wine and writing about past high school relationships (unless you freely want to do it not based upon your age for fear of your current or future friends mocking you if you chose to write about anything else.) You can still drink a strawberry milkshake and finger paint all day if you want and create a masterpiece that you and others could be proud of. Art is a risk like Life is, and you must have the courage to try it and welcome the possibility that things have a high probability of not being ‘perfect.’ Art is like the well-being of the harmony that society has with understanding one n’ all - humanity. And yeah, all art is created from some sort of emotion and with that both the good and bad emotions can pan out well in art. Transforming those emotions to create something is the key — like an alchemist. The difference between a professional and amateur is that a professional will still act even when there is fear. All of those art tools are also tools that help one find or create oneself. If you never pick up a tool to change or create something how would you expect to do it in and of yourself?
