Tonight we went to see DIR EN GREY, a Japanese progressive metal band, play at Rocher de Palmer in Cenon. The evening went well, there was no opening band. The show, which started around 9pm and lasted around an hour and fifteen minutes, also displayed horrific visuals and diversified music.

Today, I would like to take advantage of that show to talk about another phenomenon. This article states my personal opinion and what we witnessed at the venue. It doesn’t reflect the reality nor is it a general case for all fans.

We learned from the venue’s staff that about fifteen fans slept in front of the venue the day before. It is out of question for DIR EN GREY’s fans not to be at the front row. Most of them being Japanese, we could assimilate this phenomenon to the hosts’s one in Japan. We talked a little bit with them and learned that they all had a meet and greet with the band, which allowed them to meet the band and… to enter the venue first… What is the point of sleeping outside in the cold then?!

It was a “meet” without the “greet” though, as during this intimate moment with the band, fans were not allowed to touch them or to talk to them, only to look them in the eyes.. in order to cultivate the band’s mysterious aura. It’s almost to the level of the “guru” Jared Leto, who presents himself as the almighty prophet of a sort of religion. DIRENGREYism? Probably!

During the show, these people, of course at the front row, were all sentimental/romantic. Whenever Kyo (vocal) was looking at the first row, they all burst into tears. For example, when he mimed biting his wrist to drink his blood, girls in the front row also started to mime biting their wrists to drink their blood (whilst keep crying of course, it wouldn’t have been funny otherwise).

This phenomenon is difficult to apprehend from an occidental point of view. It is very common in Japan though! I am less surprised this happens with K-pop bands or idols. One fantasizes on the young boys/girls bands for their physical beauty more than for their very accessible music. DIR EN GREY’s music is very singular, disconcerting and mystical. The show in itself and its sordid, tortuous and morbid visuals prove me right. For this album and this tour, Kyo was clearly very frightening and his acting mingled with his singular singing. It gave a unique atmosphere that we’re not ready to forget.

At the end of the show, a group of young Japanese girls came to talk to us (we were still talking to the venue’s staff, who was very friendly by the way!), wishing to leave suitcases and gifts from luxury brands for the band. They couldn’t, though, and will have to give their gifts at the Paris show, since the venue’s staff wasn’t sure they would see the band again before their departure.

This made me think about the excellent video about the hosts’ phenomenon in Japan, made by Ici Japon. I strongly invite you to watch it if you want more (scary) information on the subject and to understand what exactly is a “host”! I think it’s too bad the band keeps these things going on and let some of their fans doing this (given the beautiful gifts they’re offered though, you can easily understand why!). It is extremely dangerous.

Though Bordeaux is relatively safe (in general), these fans followed the band on the whole tour, and even slept outside in the snow in a squat in Russia! The Japanese girls are probably unaware of the dangerousness, as in Japan it is quite safe when they do so (even though not everything is pink in Japan either…!). In Russia, things could have gone bad very quickly… Anyway, hosts in Japan, or bands having fans behaving like they are hosts, is very dangerous!

Alright, so here are my thoughts on this. A whole bunch of this article is straight up lies. 

Out of these 15 girls sleeping outside and following the band on the whole tour (sleeping outside in Russia in the snow etc etc), most of them were French and Chinese. 2 or 3 of them were actually Japanese in their 40′s (so definitely not young girls). The French girls were definitely quite young (I believe no more than 22/23) and they were the only ones sleeping outside in Russia (to my knowledge).

I agree with the author when he/she says it’s dangerous to sleep outside (especially in the snow WTF are you legit willing to die to be at the front row??). 

We were allowed to talk to them, there was just no Q&A like before. In Paris though we were rushed by security if we were taking too long.

Absolutely no FUCKING one mimed Kyo biting his wrist and stuff. I didn’t get the “sentimental/romantic” part at all like wtf??? The front row didn’t “burst into tears when Kyo looked at them”.

DIR EN GREY is a BAND and that would have been nice to talk about the 4 other members. DIR EN GREY isn’t Kyo and his musicians.

The Japanese girls didn't bring suitcases full of presents or whatever. 

The whole host part I mean I can’t. I can't. I JUST CAN’T. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT MEN CLOSE TO THEIR FUCKING FIFTIES WHO FUCKING SEE THEM AS HOSTS OR WHATEVER WHAT THE FUCK.

Also if some nutcases people want to sleep outside in full winter mode how is that the band’s problem? Why would you assume they even know? Also how dare you fucking imply that, if they know, they let it happen because they have nice and expensive gifts from these people? How can you make such a shitty assumption like that??

There are most definitely groupies (oh boy I don’t even wanna talk about it but I probably will at some point because I'm stil traumatised), but there are groupies in every fan base of every band. So you most definitely are making a general case out of like 5 people and straight up lies that you made up.

Also, people don't sleep outside in Japan. You have an entry number on your concert ticket. I don’t get how can you pretend writing a fucking paper on a band and its fan base without even working on the subject, solely based on lies and assumptions, without even talking about the FUCKING SHOW YOU FUCKING WENT TO SEE IN THE FIRST PLACE. “Journalism” at its best. Fuck you.
