Geek out. Be amazed and overwhelmed. And a little terrified.
My 2nd portrait completed. This one of my most popular character, Humphrey the dragon.
I learned with this one that moleskines can’t take much marker blending...
Giant, warm, colorful and happy dragon visiting little girl in her dreams. You know... just a usual Monday.
The night was cold, bitterly cold. Not nearly as bad as being unfortunate enough to be caught in a polar vortex, but still, it was worthy enough to be complained about. Despite these harsh conditions, you still had to make it outside, well after the sun set. You weren’t one to break promises, no matter the weather conditions. Bundled head to toe, you were cussing out every step of the way. Not for the reason you were out, never would you dare to do that. But it was simply due to the conditions, that were hindering your ability to make it there in the normal amount of time it took you.
You went into the forest many dared not to go into. You had strayed in there by chance when you were only a mere child, but what had been found in there, you couldn’t keep away. You never had the heart to. Hell, it’s the exact reason you never went to college. The closest college that was actually decent was miles away, and you couldn’t stand the thought of being so far away from your safe-haven and friend.
Eventually, you reached the destination you were thankful to have reached. You could already fill the warmth, as you caught glimpse of metallic scales and heard the breathing of your rather interesting friend. You had grown up with them, finding them as a small hatchling when you ventured into the forest all those years ago.
Of course you’re winged, scaled friend was far larger then you. It was common knowledge that dragons tended to grow far quicker, and way larger, then humans. No matter how large your friend grew compared to your height, they always took great care not to harm you.
While they were overjoyed as normal to see you coming up, you could barely force a smile onto your face. You had dreaded coming out here this time, due to terrible news you had overheard in the town square.
You gently placed a hand on your friend’s snout, your eyes filled with worry and sorrow. They noticed and a slight whimper escaped their lips. “You have to get out of here. It’s no longer safe for you, a hunting party is heading your way this time tomorrow.” You explained, deep sorrow in your voice. You don’t know how they learned of the dragon’s existence, but apparently they had.
Now normally, back in olden days, dragons were great magnificent creatures, friends of humans. They held a symbiotic relationship. That was before the dragons had gone extinct though. Now, humans only cared about slaying any of the rare creatures, just to mount them and boast about them.
You weren’t about to let the fate happen to your friend, the one who was always there for you. What had surprised you the most, was when they gestured for you to get upon their back. No matter how great your friendship might’ve appeared, you were never allowed to ride their back, for reasons unknown.
But the dragon had the same thoughts as you. You weren’t getting left behind while they fled to save their own scales. You scrambled onto the dragon’s back, and it wasn’t long before you were in the air, off to find someplace else to take home.
It looks like you two would be starting your lives from scratch, together.

I’ve always had a fondness for artwork showing dragons and princesses as friends instead of captor and prisoner. Happy Holidays from this cheerful duo!
