Why you should stop using the argument “Well Other Atheist said that [they believe] Belief X!” when speaking to an atheist.
1. Prominent atheists are not religious leaders.
Y’all seem to be under the impression that prominent atheists have the authority to speak for atheists like religious leaders do for theists. They don’t. That’s not how atheism works. There are no leaders who dictate what one should believe, it’s entirely a matter of every man for himself. The only person any atheist can speak for is themselves.
Sure, some beliefs have a rough, veeeery loose consensus, but that’s not because it’s an Atheist Belief™. It’s because the majority of us individually came to the same conclusion because when you don’t have the reasoning that “my god said so” some beliefs (e.g. homophobia) don’t have any justification to hold.
2. No one cares what Other Atheist’s views on such-and-such are.
Unless you’re doing something like crediting them for an argument you’re presenting or saying “I think Other Atheist explained my belief on this matter best” atheists don’t typically care who said they believe in what.
We’re a pretty irreverent bunch and not generally impressed by arguments from authority.
You have time to stream but no time to update fics for us readers? Okay.
I don’t even know where to start so I’m just going to break this down into a couple of distinct points.
1) I made a commitment to show up on stream on certain days at certain times, amounting to about 10hrs a week. This is important to me partly because keeping commitments is important to me in general, but also because I have subscribers who are sending me actual money to support the channel and who presumably expect that I will produce regular content in return. I also made a commitment to finish fmau, Sky Full of Stars, Earl Grey, and the prompts in my ask box. And I shall! I did not and cannot attach a timeframe to that commitment, and that is okay with me because it’s not something anyone is paying me to do. I will get to it when I can get to it.
2) On a related note, the income I receive from Twitch is relatively minor but the rest of my budget is accounted for down to the dollar, which means that right now Twitch is my only shot at keeping my JMT permit for the end of the summer. If I weren’t holding myself to a schedule out of a sense of commitment, I would be doing it because I don’t want to alienate the financial support that might make the JMT possible.
3) The hurdle between me and a fic update right now isn’t *time* so much as *capacity* which is an important distinction. The house I’m living in sold out from under me and I don’t have anywhere to go yet, my car is failing and must be replaced asap, I’m dealing with a surprise longterm medical issue, the Olympic Trials are like tomorrow except they keep getting rescheduled because of covid, and the full weight of a decade of stress and trauma is coming down on me as I prepare to turn the page on a chapter of my life that has not turned out the way I thought it would or hoped it might. I’m doing my best but I’m @#$%ing tired. When I have the energy to do something creative, I work on fic. That hasn’t been often. When I don’t have that energy, I can usually still turn on a game and connect with folks in my community. That’s much easier work for me than creative work when I’m exhausted.
4) Honestly Anon, the weight of unfinished projects bothers me plenty without you dropping guilt trips in my ask box. I actively stress about not having updated. I sit and stare at the screen when I know perfectly well it isn’t in me right now. It’s a constant presence on my to-do list. And frankly, that sucks. Writing is supposed to be fun. I do it because I enjoy it, and because I like sharing stories with y’all. When it’s just another chore that needs finishing, I’m neither having fun nor putting out work that I’m proud of. There are plenty of other areas in my life where I *have* to go through that right now; I don’t want to put myself through it with writing.
Anyway, if the live updates really bother you, you can just turn them off. I post them here because there are some lurkers and chat regulars who aren’t in the Discord and might not otherwise get them, but if they aren’t for you that’s fine. They’re all tagged Twitch!Oreo for your convenience. Do yourself a favor and block that tag. Or hey, just unfollow if it really bothers you that much. I promise you won't be breaking my heart.

“friends” that compete with you, embarrass you in front of other people, belittle your dreams, dismiss your thoughts, tell others your private business, make you feel inferior, or just drag you down are not your friends.
someone else’s beauty is not the absence of your own. flowers are pretty, but so are Christmas lights and sunsets, and they don’t look the same at all
stop wondering if you’re good enough for others and start wondering if they’re good enough for you.
