Little reflections

We performed a family wax reading on Dec 18th (Eponalia). Fittingly saw a horse within the wax :)

In Poland, this is done on St. Andrew’s Day (Andrzejki - Nov 29).

The key I used is watched over by Frigg (technically, I call the statue Frija because it has both traits of Freyja and Frigg.)

But I got to thinking more on the significance of a key and how both Frigg and Mokosh are so tied to fate, waters, and the ancestors. The divination is meant to give clues on how the next year is going to go. And the instinct to show my child at least once how to do it with a key was interesting.

This statue of her has been more of a door for “Hearth mother” energy, including the Matronae at times in the past.

Something, something…

It’s interesting how the lines of things flow similarly between each other and the function still remains similar.

Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Frija, The Goddess of Love

Well here we are another Thor’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic) mythological characters.  This week it’s Frija / Frijjo, High German version of Frigg, and Goddess of Love.

Finding my relationship with Frija/Frigg prompting me to remember my heritage and doing ancestor work. The goddess Mokosh is very similar to Frigg… finding myself and my studies running full circle.

I have been recreating meanings of the runes for my own purposes based on nothing else than original and scholarly sources… and I’d like to propose a case for the ᛉ rune (in addition to ᛒ) to be associated with Frigg/Frig/Frija based on the Anglo-Saxon rune poem.

Elk-sedge keeps its home most often in the swamps,

it grows in the water, and grimly wounds,

it burns the blood of any man who grasps it.

This portion of the poem is something I have yet to see in “modernized” sources. Many say it means Elk based on the Proto-Germanic word of Algiz. But the Anglo-Saxon poem is the oldest that we know of, followed by the Norwegian and Icelandic poems. Or which, they read that this rune actually means “man.”

For me, I rather like the idea of the elk-sedge. Not only does it grow in the marshlands, the fens, it also feels very familiar to the story of the mistletoe.
