WHY ARE YOUR POEMS SO DARK? after Linda Pastan
Because every day begins and ends in the dark. And so does every life.
Because I was pushed into this world on a Monday during a thunderstorm, cloud of brunette crowning my head.
I cut my first tooth between the hours of midnight and dawn. My first heartbreak too.
Growing up, I learned the value of contrast from Bob Ross. He said: You need the dark in order to show the light. And Atwood taught me about blackberries; how the best ones grow in shadow.
Birds instinctively know this. And isn’t that a beautiful, happy accident? All that poetry—bursting from the mouths of crows.
Why are my poems so dark?
Because negative space makes everything clearer. Because the closest I ever came to feeling alive was fumbling in the dark. And I’m still trying to remember the words to describe it.
