ROOSTER: “Not when you’re playing with Sweetheart it’s not. She puts words like ephemeral and I put dog.”

PHEONIX: “A scratch? Your arm is off!”

SWEETHEART: “Like I said. Just slap a bandage on it, I’ll be fine.”

PHOENIX: Screams.

DEATH: “I’m here for Peter Mitchell and Bradley Bradshaw?”

SWEETHEART: [Pulling Mav and Rooster away] “Good day, sir.”

DEATH: “No, wait-”

SWEETHEART: [Yanking both of them away by their flight suit collars] “I said good day, sir!”

CYCLONE: “Language, Lieutenant!”

SWEETHEART: “Heckity heck, I crave death.”

CYCLONE: “Do you know what they want?”

SWEETHEART: “To make fun of you, probably.”

CYCLONE: “And my secretary let them in?!”

SWEETHEART: “Oh, I charmed your secretary into letting them in. She’s also getting them coffee right now.”

SWEETHEART: [Scoffs] “Maybe not to your face.”

HANGMAN: “The ambulance ride to the hospital…”

PHEONIX: “There was no ambulance, we just carried you to the base infirmary.”

HANGMAN: “But I swear there were sirens?”

PHOENIX: “Oh, that was Sweetheart.”

SWEETHEART: “I’m sorry, I got nervous!”

SWEETHEART: [Positively swimming in one of his hoodies] “No, nope, total mystery there.”

HALO: “Okay, you made one simple mistake, it’s nothing we can’t fix. Try not to overreact.”

SWEETHEART: [Already laying facedown in a hole she dug and covering herself with dirt] “I’m not!”

MAV: “Kid, you are the last genuinely good person I know. I would believe cartoon birds help you get dressed in the morning.”

ROOSTER: “Officer, let her go. She’s not dangerous!”

HALO: “I mean, look at her shoes. She’s wearing crocs.”

SWEETHEART: [Looks down at her shoes]

OFFICER: “Her crocs are not the issue, ma’am.”

HALO: “But they are an issue.”

𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆… 𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐆𝐔𝐍: 𝐌𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐊 𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑, 𝐑𝐄𝐘𝐍𝐀 “𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓” 𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐎

❝ People had been underestimating Reyna her entire life. She knew exactly what people saw when they looked at her: a short women with doe eyes and a pastel wardrobe, someone who was fragile and naïve to the ways of the world. All of that, combined with her naturally kind and friendly nature, was the entire reason her callsign was “Sweetheart” in the first place.

But while Reyna may have been short with doe eyes and a pastel wardrobe, she was far from fragile. As an autistic woman in the American military, she’d had to fight tooth and nail for every promotion, every nod of approval she’d ever received. She was a damn good pilot, and she knew it, but for someone like her, that wasn’t enough. She’d had to be twice as good as her peers just to get what they would have gotten anyway, and it had made her strong, but she also refused to let that keep her from having a good heart. She would give her Top Gun classmates an adorably sweet smile, she would hold the door for everyone who was entering a room behind her, and then she would turn around and completely kick their asses in training.

Reyna is the best of the best, and though she isn’t the type to brag, she damn well knows it. So when she’s called to Fightertown to go back to Top Gun and be trained for an important suicide mission, she relishes the opportunity to prove it. Oh, sure, she still plans to have fun with her old friends Natasha and Bradley and enjoy this place’s beautiful beaches, but her priority is kicking ass in training and getting chosen for this mission, nothing else.

But then there’s Jake Seresin, with his obnoxious attitude and casual rudeness and stupid callsign that comes from a ridiculous childhood game. Jake Seresin, who’s constantly insulting Phoenix and her new backseater and whose personal mission is seemingly to piss off Rooster as much as possible.

Jake Seresin, with his lovely blond hair and bright smile that gives Reyna butterflies. Jake Seresin, who’s an amazing pilot and truly cares about pushing Rooster to be a braver, better pilot than he already is. Jake Seresin, who won’t stop flirting with Reyna no matter how many times she rolls her eyes and ignores him, and who makes is perfectly clear that he doesn’t underestimate her one bit.

Reyna came to Miramar focused only on making sure she gets chosen for this mission. But the more sugared smiles and honeyed words Hangman shoots her way, the harder it gets to keep her heart guarded the way she has since she joined the military.

Sweetheart has convinced herself that keeping a cheerful smile on her face and walls around her heart is the only way to survive being a Navy pilot. But if Hangman truly wants to break those walls down… she isn’t sure she’s going to be able to put up much of a fight. ❞
