Id love for ppl to rec me some games available on gog

I have a couple but ppl often gift me the ones I'm interested in getting on gog on stream so i never know what to get when i wanna try something new

I mostly play cult of the lamb, hades, & pokemon, atm but have played stuff like dragon quest, portal, gris, sonic unleashed, Minecraft, etc

I'm not very good at games (i get stuck in the tutorial for mirror's edge, shadow the hedgehog, & the combat in avatar frontiers of pandora or Knight of the old republic) but I'm willing to give stuff a go

My current keyboard & mouse are pretty crappy so i mostly use a controller but the controller compatibility isn't essential for me, really I just wanna hear what ppl like playing on there

NORCO: One of my favorite games ever, you play Kay, returning home to Norco, Louisiana in the US after her mother's death, trying to locate her missing brother and untangling her own memories and exploring the ways the nearby oil conglomerate has poisoned and shaped the landscape and community in a near-ish future.

Hylics and Hylics 2: I don't quite know how to describe these games, they're surrealist little experiences. Feels like you melted some Mœbius artwork in the microwave.

In Other Waters: You play a mysterious AI in the diving suit of a xenobiologist on an abandoned research base on Gliese 677Cc. You can only interface with the world around you, and this researcher you're trying to keep safe, through a very minimal UI - it's wonderful and such a fun use of video game elements and the UI itself - like nothing else. It's by the same person who did Citizen Sleeper.

Sable: The only open world exploration game I'll recommend. Beautiful soundtrack, beautiful world, and beautiful story. Extremely relaxing to play. Unmicrowaved Mœbius.

Harvester: I don't know if this even counts as underrated? It's a needlessly edgy 90s point and click game, but in a good way IMO.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream: Another edgy 90s point and click game, but this one is an adaptation of the short story, with Harlan Ellison actually writing the script. Just a very neat game!

hello this is the anon that recommended silent hill 2 and a bunch of other games. so many of the games that i mentioned are designed for Windows but don't worry!!! i know ways to get them working on mac!!!

also i am so so so sorry for the long-ass ask. i just love yapping, but this might be really hard to read (as demonstrated by looking 2 inches below this)

most of the games i mentioned (Ib, OFF, most of vgperson's translations) are built on RPG Maker, specifically RPG Maker 2000/2003. those games normally run only on Windows, but there's a program you can use called EasyRPG that works for Mac that basically ports those games!! if i'm remembering correctly, all you have to do is place the folder of the game you want to play into the EasyRPG folder, then run the EasyRPG executable.

other games like PEDESTAL, Mad Father, and The Witch's House are unfortunately made with either WolfRPG or another version of RPG Maker, which will unfortunately not work with EasyRPG... more on that later

anyway about Cave Story!! this is my favorite game ever!! first off go to cavestory dot org. it has downloads for the original freeware version of Cave Story and is like. THE site to go to for that game.

you have two choices. you can either use the mac port of the original freeware, or you can use a port (i use doukutsu-rs). doukutsu-rs has a lot of improvements over the original freeware, and is my preferred way of Storying my Cave. anyway so just download the Windows Aeon Genesis version of Cave Story, download the mac version of doukutsu-rs from its Github page, and then just drop the doukutsu-rs executable inside the Cave Story folder! you can then run doukutsu-rs by clicking its executable.

so. about the dreaded Other Games. a lot of windows games unfortunately do not have mac ports. but there is hope!! the best option is to use a translator. Wine is probably your best bet, it's meant for Linux but i'm certain there's a Mac version available on the site. there's also CrossOver by CodeWeavers, it seems a lot more user-friendly, but unfortunately it seems paid with a free trial...

if none of those work, there is Another Way. an infinitely worse one. you can always just download a virtual machine like VirtualBox and run a game through the virtual machine, but it not only requires setting up the VM, finding a .ISO for your Windows os of choice that won't kersplode your computer, as well as setting up the operating system... don't do this. also it's so intensive on system resources that if your computer's insides don't turn into liquid iron, you'll only be able to get like 10 FPS on like. DOOM. or whatever.

if you're interested in emulating older games, look on archive.org, Vimm's Lair, emuplanet for arcade games, and the r/roms megathread for whatever you need. of course, always, ALWAYS use Tor or some sort of VPN to search those things up, so your ISP doesn't freak out. ALWAYS use direct-to-download sites, don't mess with torrenting unless you want a headache.

emulators to use is Mesen for (S)NES, DuckStation for PlayStation, PCSX2 for PS2, Dolphin for GameCube/Wii, MAME for arcade games. the Emulation General Wiki is always a great resource!!

remember, if something looks sketchy, scan it with VirusTotal or your preferred antivirus! kind of goes without saying but i felt like saying it.

i have no idea how much you're interested in first-person shooters, but if you are, i highly recommend Quake. very dark, very scary, lovecraftian horror. also really old. there ARE sourceports available for mac but i'd rather not get into that, but as always if there's a steam version, it's usually your best bet. Quake has one! and it's great!

of course mentioning Quake also means i have to mention classic Doom. doom is great no notes. DOOM + DOOM II is only 10 dollars on steam and goes on sale every 2 seconds. if you're interested in sourceports use dsda-doom, it has a mac version too. okay enough about doom

also definitely In Stars and Time. you may have heard of it. kind of a slog to play but oh my stars the story.

also Half-Life. one of the most important games ever imo. also very good but WOW the graphics have not aged well. it's on steam for 10 dollars but i'd recommend waiting for it to go on sale (or if the Valve Complete Pack goes on sale for like 20 dollars again).

wait if RE 7 had you like. actually hallucinating and stuff. you will not survive Silent Hill 2. so much mindfuck-y shit happens in that game you would not BELIEVE.

oh also Cry of Fear! it's free on Steam and has a VERY similar vibe to Silent Hill 2. same with being completely terrifying

oh and while i'm at it a bunch of other free pc games that i love (that may or may not be horror games):

Ib, Mad Father, The Witch's House, Cave Story, really anything on vgperson's site (i especially recommend PEDESTAL), Irisu Syndrome, Yume Nikki + Yume 2kki, and of course the goat visual novel Set Yourself on Fire
