So, in your au, did gems originally take on mechanical looking forms, before changing into more organic looking ones(hence the mask)?

Good question!

But I won't answer things about "original gems" yet since it's spoilers :3c I do have things figured out for that first generation of gems though (first gemeration?)

As for the masks, they're a status symbol. Only higher-ranking gems may wear masks. However, commanding officers or rare gems like sapphires can only wear masks that partially cover the face. About 50% of their faces, maximum.

A gem's mask design reflects which diamond they serve. So markings similar to YD's mask serve YD and so on.

Among gems, mask = someone important.

Only Diamonds can wear masks that completely cover their faces, and unlike other gems that can wear masks seeing a Diamond's face without their permission is a huge transgression. To everyday gems, their masks are their faces.

Likewise, a Diamond can show great trust in another, low-ranking gem by willingly showing them her face. Although this would be pretty rare.

Ouroboros AU Worldbuilding: Gem Speech

Gems are known for having one of the most complex languages in the galaxy. They speak in heavily synthesized and distorted sounds that are gibberish to the non-gem ear. From the small handful of gem prisoners, it’s been proven they are capable of learning other languages.

Still-developing translation software based on recently uncovered documents from ████████ archives have given some progress in deciphering gem speech. However it is slow-going and not 100% reliable at this time. Different gem types are known to have a set of sounds unique to them. Despite this they have no trouble communicating with each other.

It’s speculated all gems are on a certain “frequency” or channel much like how radios link together. Very few non-gems have heard Gem leaders, the Diamonds, speak.

I’m not the best with audio editing software (yet, working on it), but until then the closest examples I could think of were Highsinger from Star Wars, and Puppycat. Just to give a rough idea of what kinds of type of sounds I had in mind.

The statues are guardians for White’s chamber, made of neodymium (a powerful natural magnet). She can see whoever’s outside her door through their eyes, but can’t puppet them directly. She can just connect to them through the cables in their heads and peek through the eyes like binoculars.

I wouldn’t technically count them as gems since their bodies aren’t made of hard light and don’t have a gemstone at their core. They are animated by White’s essence, but don’t have enough processing power to be fully self aware and don’t have any abilities that gems possess. They’re very simple machines with a simple task.

They become active if anyone but a Diamond enters the area without authorization. So if a quartz wanders in without being escorted by a Diamond she’s gonna get shattered.
