William found himself on the wrong end of an airlock malfunction and ended up in a new body made up of Wisps— little camouflaging aliens with the ability to carry souls. Unfortunately, while they could disguise themselves perfectly well to most humans, they drew in the various creatures hitching rides on the Deadwood fleet, and William was forced to transfer to the Prime ship for explorers-in-training
Vincent grew up in the Fauna system, incredibly far away from William or Dakota. Tech was a lot less advanced there, and things were a lot more dangerous, but magic allowed for innovation in teleportation and augmentation. Vincent was heavily augmented, aspiring to fight the hostile creatures which plagued his home planet, but things turned sour when a black hole appeared and threatened Fauna. While he tried to fight, Vincent found himself teleported several solar systems over with a band of sentient AIs ported into him. Now, he’s training on the Prime ship to become an explorer.
Dakota’s species is incredibly weak compared to most other inhabitants of the galaxy. This didn’t stop him from becoming a daredevil after the death of his parents, culminating in an incident which left him close to death. Luckily for him, he was rescued in an experimental procedure which granted him a human heart and blood, making him unusually strong. After training with his master for a while, Dakota decided to join the Prime ship and learn to be an explorer
