How does gem alternation work?

It works by altering a gem's facets

Or in extreme cases, their cuts.

Every gem as a cut (the shape) and the facets (the flat parts)

These form naturally for gems, and can determine their personalities, powers and abilities.

When a gemcutter alters a gem, they are changing the facets.

It's a very tedious and difficult process.

Gemcutters are a special group of their own, they have vast knowledge of how all gem types work and function.

To change the facets, they take the gem and carefully grind away certain areas using a grindstone.

Changing or adding facets can alter a gem's powers and abilities.

They have to be careful. They are grinding and chipping away pieces of these gems. If they take away too much, the gem may not be able to reform or could shatter.
