hello!! i am working on a fantasy story with some friends and am having trouble being at least time-accurate (especially since things at the start of the story would likely take place in 551 in a world where nonbinary dragons exist and stuff and are normal )! especially since i want to make some characters that would be emo or alt in like 1550….

you are very good at making things look time accurate while still having fun!! so if you are able to give advice, i would greatly appreciate it. no worries if not, though!!

AHH WAIT THIS IS SO COOL i honestly find it rlly funny that you say that bc. Honestly i feel like thats one of the things i’m kinda bad at 😭😭😭 Like i plan to (or at least want to, w the state of the world rn we’ll see how things go) study history so history and historical fashion is smthn i’m rlly interested in, but when it comes to my designs i think more often than not i just end up leaning towards fantasy? I try and take historical Inspiration but i don’t have a specific time period in mind, i kinda just do whatever as long as it doesn’t look too modern….

Iiiiii feel like what makes my stuff feel a little more grounded in reality is just that there are some “rules” i tend to never break or break as at least little as possible. The world around tts in my head is “historical elements as long as it’s convenient for me”. Yeah they can have plumbing and be gay and trans and they can make fantasy hrt for fun because i don’t feel like working that out but GOD FORBID they aren’t wearing corsets

I like to add little details around that— varian being trans with a binder made the same way as a corset is my FAVORITE example of this and one i think rlly adds to the worldbuilding even if most ppl don’t know about it (bc it is actually entirely historically possible). For some reason proper undergarments really help w immersion for me specifically and i dont know why, although I’ll still often give them outfits that don’t fit with that at all, it’s the thought that counts GAHAHAHAAH. (Im very particular abt corsets because people do notttt understand them at all and i HATE how demonized they are. that line in “happily ever after” like “sure there are corsets and buckles and bows” treating corsets like they’re a bad thing AS ALWAYS pisses me off SO MUCH GIRL YOU WERE WEARING A CORSET UR WEARING A LACED BODICE RIGHT NOW SHUT UP.)

I TEND to say like late 1800s for tts mostly so i can tie in frozen for fun, but its objectively really funny because frozen does actually pay attention to the “time period” a lot more than tts which is truly just full on fantasy, but you can very much tell frozen is late 1800s. (they have b&w photography, which you’ll see i do include in my future au stuff). So it feels a little out of place sometimes imo but. Its fun. So idgaf.

I do think frozen is a good example of this concept in general, i’ve just never been able to take much inspiration from it because fantasy designs always give me a lot more freedom so im lazy AHDHSDJ

Unironically the twins’ outfits were ripped pretty much straight from s2 rapunzel concept art so i cant speak much on those designs… when i Do take historical inspiration its usually from victorian or edwardian eras, but its usually just basic silhouettes or cherry picked elements. but sometimes ill pull stuff from completely different periods too. a lot of my stuff is a weird melting pot. For example:

Donella has one of my favorite designs, she’s basically wearing a late victorian walking suit. I wanted something sleek and professional while still feminine, which was perfect since women mostly started wearing stuff like these when they were just entering the workforce. Emery’s adult design is also inspired by these, with a favorite detail of mine being her chatelaine, a common accessory for women used to just hold little objects like keys, watches, coin purses, etc, which were very commonly used by nurses!

some of my stuff has historical elements but from just. Completely different fucking time periods. Unironically a lot of younger emerys outfits were inspired by molly mcintire american girl which is all the way in the 1940s. But i try and pick out other elements too. Big peter pan collars were a part of a lot of kids clothes in the victorian era. I also always put the babies/little toddlers in those long nightgowns, including the boys! because that was all babies would wear for a long time, it made it far easier to change diapers and they were easy to clean.

More than anything else just don’t stress too much abt it. do some research and have fun with it!!! Look up some references and just pick and choose and throw things together however you please. A lot of my stuff just has NO historical accuracy whatsoever and is just full fantasy. Ryder’s adult design is quite literally and very clearly just howl from howls moving castle. Because what the hell sure. he slays in it.

I am honestly not very driven to update it at the moment, I’ve got a bit of writers block on it. Note revisions are happening in the bg, but the actual writing is on the wayside for now.

That’s the most I’ll say about that on this blog though, bc I’ve been asked a lot about updates for it to the point I feel a bit burdened by that fic. 🙏🫠

I’m NOT abandoning IDE though. There are no plans to discontinue it, now or in the future. It is on a hiatus until I can get things sorted out.

Out of curiosity, in the OG post, you mentioned that a big reason the skeletons didn't like the mage MC was because they were too good at hiding their soul. Do the mafia skelebros find it off-putting as well? Does it tip them off about the reader not actually being a civilian?

You know what? You have a point there.

Ok Im gonna sound like im fixing things in post production here but i kinda sorta am but also it just totally makes sense anyways so heres the explanation.

Mage MC , in the very first part of the series, was on the job, transparently working with the skeleton household AS a mage. Id imagine they wouldnt bother hiding their identity AS a mage from them - hiding their soul is just a constant normal for them to protect themselves. Its by no means standard practice either - soul magic would be very difficult to learn for a multitude of reasons, one of them being that humans cant naturally sense souls to begin with; not to even mention the fact that keeping up that sort of defensive type of magic would be exhausting and just generally a plain waste of energy - thankfully our Mage MC is a freak of nature and an absolute magic addict so it wouldnt exactly be odd for them to just keep it on at all times - especially since theyve delt with demons/eldritch horrors and plenty of other horrible things that would jump on the opportunity for such a 5 course meal as the soul of a high mage.

However during their time at the mob mansion (tm) theyre actively keeping up appearances - not specifically due to the skeletons, Vincents more veteran “employees” are already aware of who they are, its just an unspoken rule not to tell on any of Vincents acquaintances unless specifically instructed - even more so because thats the damn high mage, you really think any of them would risk our MC’s scrutiny considering their colorful reputation? But im getting off track here - MC is actively choosing to appear as a civillian - they probably know some neat little glamor spells they picked up from topside monsters that also like to pretend to be good old “civilians” (Vampires, demons, sirens, faeries, dopplegangers ect. ect.) So when the mafia skeletons do preform their CHECK then all theyre seeing is exactly what our MC wants them to see. The reason why theyre doing this is because MC knows theyre quite prolific as it is, besides that - theyre injured and already one assasination attempt in, they wouldnt risk bringing trouble to Vincents doorstep or getting in a reckless fight with so many bystanders around. They might be all powerful but they only got to where they are now by being careful so they wouldnt be taking any risks when theyre not at their best physically or mentally.

I imagine thats also what they did when they went off to solve the Horrortale issue in the Underground, they were already masking their presence even back then, because causing a panic by setting off a bunch of monsters (who are already dealing with PTSD and anxiety) would not exactly be a smart thing to do.

Personally? I think Mage MC most likely masks themself as a good old regular Joe every time they clock out and go home, i cant imagine them wanting the attention that comes with their rank when theyre say - grocery shopping or idk, trying to use the public restroom.

So yeah, thats sort of it, i probably should have explained it more in the story itself but it sort of never crossed my mind to put it down on paper because i already have such a strong image of our Mage MC in my head that i just brush off all the little details sometimes on accident - sorry bout that, ill have to add a mention to this in the next part. Ty for the ask though! I love the fact that you guys are so invested in this little series that you keep theorizing and even asking about specific details like this, it genuinely makes me smile yk? 😭🥹♥️♥️♥️

I love love love eerie domesticity. An elephant in the room, something that's not being said, impending doom, all spilling into coffee, laundry, dishes, taxes. The Summer Hikaru Died sort of vibes.

Inevitability is also such a cool trope to me! Self-fulfilling prophecies, etc etc.

Picking self-interest over the good of the world; the avoidance of self-sacrifice. Also so underutilized bc in a lot of recent media I feel the only substantial moral signaling that exists is putting others over oneself (which is not always bad!!! selflessness is a good trait!!! i just feel like i'm being beat over the head w/ the sacrifice thing) -- so it's really nice to read a different story, a Dororo-like narrative where someone puts their interests and autonomy over the potential benefit to others.
