Guess who’s back, back again—happy Audio Drama Sunday to everyone, hope we’re doing well. I’m gonna cover a bunch of stuff I’ve been listening to while I was on my little sabbatical.

🥚 Can we talk??? About @vestaclinicpod????? What a way to end the season! I was so impressed with exactly how much suspense this show managed to wring out of this one episode, and of course not everything is all right yet, but maybe it will be! I love the classic medical drama trope of one person desperate to give their life for another while the doctor pleads with them to see sense. I don’t know what will happen next season, but it will be…new!

☄️ @midnightburgr has done it again—I ADORE science history, and Tycho Brahe is an absolutely inspired choice for Ava in particular. Shoutout to Alan Burgon doing yet another dubious Scandinavian accent. I love this weirdo, but I love even more what this does for Ava’s characterization. She wants to be untouchable and a creature of pure math and physics, but she is IMMEDIATELY friends with Tycho’s wife Kirsten, and does her best for the two of them, and STILL makes the decision to go home in the end. The universe doesn’t care about you, but you have to care about the universe.

🪞 ItMe posted that this episode of @storiesfromylelmore was a hate letter to all the girls who were like, “Let’s summon a literal murder ghost to this fun sleepover,” and honestly I have to agree. I don’t think it’s bad to want to know what kind of powers I’m dealing with before I deal with them! Of course, the literal children who are in this episode have no such hang-ups. I love this episode—I love the weirdness and the clothes shenanigans (including the information that Keryth is larger than non-wolf Rion, which may have come up before but is especially good here) and especially the last-minute rescue. It rules.

🔎 I listened to all of @mouseknightstudios’ Ghost InSpectors! And I was frankly enchanted. What is it about a good old fashioned detective story that hits the spot? This show is silly and serious in turns, and I especially liked how it did not ever shy away from grief, and the repeated grief you would experience if you could see ghosts. I liked it a lot.

🕳️ Ohhhh man, The Grotto. I figured between Woe Begone telling me about it every week and really enjoying Redacted, I should check out Athan’s other show. I am SO impressed. I’m about four episodes in and this show is terrifying—and it’s not just the claustrophobia of the caves, it’s the psychological torture of grief, a would being opened up over and over again. Literally. I’m already so into this, I can’t wait to see what happens next, watching from between my fingers. Also, that music slaps.

Audio Drama Sunday - 22 February

A late update this week! My to-listen list has also piled up to almost 90. I’m trying to avoid looking at it. @theredactedunit — Minisode: Sloanly: this episode was so sweet and sad. Sloan in this episode felt like so much more of a person, even though we’d been shown a lot of her personality beforehand. Her friendship with Dr Danse, the way they were both going to make up and then backed out again, the way her colleague almost definitely thought she was hitting on her 😭 get that woman some friends. Specifically Dr Danse, but more too. 👹

His Royal Fakin’ Highness — 4. Give Me Some - 8. A Very Unhappy Re-Birthday: the relationship between O and Leo is a delight. In these episodes, they actually start acting like a couple. We get more information about Ophelia and the King — the way she snuck him Snickers as a kid and they’d sit together in the garden. He isn’t even present, but he really is the ghost in the plot. Unfortunately, it is still a Hamlet adaptation so things can’t be easy. Currently, Hamlet is awful and Ophelia deserves better. 👑

@somethingsamissatjunipershouse — The Day I Spoke to Juniper: a Bloody FM production!! You need to listen to this podcast Stat. Finley has a kind of quiet, sad life until they talk to gorgeous, alluring Juniper in the park and actually score a date! But Juniper’s life isn’t what it seems. My current theory is that she talks to quiet, shy people, strings them along, brings them into her household and discards them emotionally when she gets bored. I might be completely wrong, but I’m calling it. And that she had something to do with Finley’s dad “leaving”. Either way, the group that produced The Gospel of Haven and Shelterwood is definitely backing another great LGBT show. It’s got similar vibes to How to Win Friends and Disappear People, but I prefer this so I’m on tenterhooks for episode 2. 🏚️

Ghost InSpectors — Episode 1: A Halloween to Die For - Episode 2: Unfinished Business: who here likes friendship, mystery and sadness? Ghost InSpectors has it all. Mulligan and Ned are private detectives looking into a serial killer on Halloween, until they wake up by the side of the road with no memories of how they got there. They walk back home, where they discover all their friends mourning them. This podcast has got in a few good (small) twists already, and waiting for the penny to drop regarding their deaths was painful. I love their friendship, and I can’t wait for them to discover the serial killer and remember how they died, even though I know the ending to this podcast will crush me. This podcast also made it onto my list of audio dramas to test your detective skills, if you want to get some other cool investigative podcast recs. 👻

Ghost InSpectors is a 7-episode comedy-mystery podcast where two private detectives are killed and try to solve their murder along with a friend.
