Thinking about how a) Esther crafted Monty’s human self to be desirable to her targets and b) it was targets plural, Monty came up with the idea of focusing Edwin and ignoring Charles on his own
Because I entirely buy that her gaydar went off on Edwin even after just seeing him for twenty seconds during active combat, but Charles is, while super queer-coded, not as clockable in that context, ya know? I mean, Edwin limp-wrists his punches like a champ (complimentary) but Charles-in-combat could pretty readily be read as a slightly GNC generically-protective dude
My point being I basically see two scenarios here
Either Esther just doesn’t know monosexuals exist. Like she is unfamiliar with the concept. It is multisexuals only in her world. Why would someone care about the gender of a hot person that sounds fake.
Clearly if you aren’t able to seduce someone of any gender it’s because you’re not trying hard enough, the concept of exclusive sexualities is utterly foreign to her. Like she may (or may not) recognize that yes there are some baby-infants (under 2 centuries old) who haven’t realized yet that the gender of a hot person doesn’t matter but that just means you need to work a little harder.
or
She wasn’t using gaydar on them individually, she assumed on sight that Charles and Edwin were Together and planned for Monty to either:
1) seduce them into a throuple (it’s possible also that she’s unfamiliar with the concept of insistent monogamy) or
2) be a homewrecker and have an affair with either both of them separately or whichever one was easier (which gives the added bonuses of upsetting Mr. and Mr. Ugh, and throwing them off their game)

you know what would be cute, getting to see all of Edwin's love interests teaming up to save him
either in a romcom retelling of ep7 or in an imaginary s2 episode where someone is after our boy again
put that harem to work baby
the idea of Monty looking exactly like someone Charles used to go to school with always haunts me
Monty, who is all softer edges, a totally astronomy dork, and still finding his footing in how to be a human being. he’s awkward, and tormented, and sweet
but he coasts on just the right side of bitchy in jest (or in total earnest) and all of a sudden, Charles forgets that he’s looking at the boy he was hardcore beefing with and sees a completely different person
and Monty is at his WIT’S END because damn, he really thought he and Charles were cool now, but here and there, Charles stops being able to look at him for extended periods and it drives him mad
the irony of Esther sending Monty after Edwin, when Charles is beside himself at the similarities between him and the boy he once knew. the possibility of Monty going after the “wrong boy”. how this awakens/affects Charles and his relationship with Edwin.
like I KNOW I already wrote a fic about it but I’m gnawing at the bars of my enclosure, I need MORE!!!

Never gonna be over how the camera person peeks over Edwin's shoulder here because they know the audience wants to check if Charles is getting jealous about Monty
