Ghost Pipe 𓇗
I saw so many beautiful ghostpipes today! They're my favorite flower.
The ghostpipe is a plant without chlorophyll. They are mycoheterotrophic, meaning they get their energy from underground fungal networks that in turn source their energy from nearby tree roots. Ghostpipes are a sign of rich soil and forest biodiversity. They can grow in darkness, but due to their interconnected nature they are seldom successfully propagated by humans.
I think a lot about what it means to be a living thing lacking one of the critical features required to be a member of their kingdom, yet still wholly belonging to it. A being that grows in darkness and yet thrives, all because of its membership within an intricate, highly-developed community of other diverse beings.
Ghostpipes cannot grow alone. You cannot keep one in a pot. The light from one person cannot sustain it.
Some things cannot be explained by what they lack.
Some are only understood by seeing what they are connected to.
My shop is still on #vacationmode while I catch up on things and heal my stomach ulcer but here is a look at the finished display for my #ghostpipe sculpture. This piece is a homage to the little ecosystem at my local park where I found many #monotropauniflora and #russulaceae mushrooms this summer. I used real dried leaves from the park on the base I made for the glass flowers and mushrooms. This piece is meant to spark conversation about the interconnected relationships between plants, trees and #mycorrhizal fungi happening below our feet when we tread in the forest. “Monotropa Uniflora and Russula Emetica” Borosilicate glass and mixed media, 2021 Naturebonestudio.com
What pollinates ghost pipe, aka indian pipe? Bees of course. It took me as a surprise, but this parasitic plant (feeds on the fungi associated with trees) is in the ericaceous family, same as blueberries and kin and indeed bees, both bumblebees and "small" bees are noted, come to these flowers. Since they often bloom later in the year when most of the spring plants and bees are gone it would be interesting to learn more about its pollination strategy. Datura is helpful for headaches, insomnia, stress, rheumatism, new and old bone injuries, deep tissue bruising and/or bruising of bones, bone on bone injuries, arthritis, carpal tunnel, as well as joint and tendon issues. It also aids with depression and anxiety and helps to calm frayed nerves. Used in rituals, Datura is used to more effectively commune with spirits, and with one’s ancestors. Other uses include the banishing of spirits and protection from malicious spirits. A slightly larger dosage can be used to experience Datura’s sedative and/or aphrodisiac properties. This perhaps is the most enjoyable use of my Datura ointment. thejaggedpath.com (link in bio) #datura #ghostpipe #deadlynightshade #poisonpath #medicinalherbs #medicinalmushrooms #warriorwitch #witchesofinstagram #apothecary #veneficium #alchemy #traditionalwitchcraft #hedgewitchery #hedgerider #hedgewitch #flyagaric #smokeblend #magicmushrooms #mushrooms #flyingointment #flyingoil #bruja #thejaggedpath #witchhealer #healingwitch https://www.instagram.com/p/B8lOBqinyMC/?igshid=1had9fms1vmd
Evil Bones Pain Relief Tincture I have offered this proprietary blend to a limited number of clients, as a custom blend, & the feedback has totally blown me away. The relief found while utilizing this blend compels me to make it available to each of you. This is a mixture of my two most popular, most beneficial pain relief tinctures--ghost pipe and 0p¡um lettuce--with the addition of wood betony. Ghost pipe has been used for migraines and nerve pain, as well as emotional pain. It is reported to offer the same affects as 0p¡um. Described by Ghost Pipe users, used for emotional pain relief---it was as though everything he/she was upset about was taken out and put beside him/her where he/she could see it and work with it. Oddly, this almost identical to the way that Ghost Pipe works with physical pain. It is helpful for acute anxiety & panic attacks, marked by emotional or sensory overload. King's American Dispensatory, 1898: • Periodic fevers, Childhood seizures (febrile seizures), Epileptic seizures, Opthamological inflammation, & bladder inflammation. 0p¡um lettuce acts on the central nervous system to produce pain-relieving effects; reportedly as strong as 0p¡um but with fewer side effects. Aside from relieving pain, wild lettuce promotes numerous health benefits; see website for more info Similarities to 0p¡um include its ability to dull the sensation of pain while producing a mild, euphoric effect that can last for hours. Wood Betony is beneficial for painful conditions including gout, headache, & facial pain; & for urinary tract conditions including bladder & kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) & bladder pain & swelling (inflammation). It is also used to treat stress & tension, nervousness, & epilepsy. *Presented for educational purposes; sold as a curio only. Statements not reviewed by the FDA.
