Our Whisky of the Month for April: Glen Garioch 12 Years Old

We’re welcoming spring with a true Highland classic! The Glen Garioch 12 y.o. comes from one of Scotland’s easternmost distilleries and is a wonderful example of how perfectly Sherry and Bourbon casks can harmonise.

Why it’s our favourite this month: Whilst many modern whiskies tend to be light and floral, the Glen Garioch retains a wonderful down-to-earth character. It is robust, honest, and has just the right amount of ‘oomph’ to make chilly April evenings cosy.

It is non-chill-filtered, which preserves all the flavour-carrying oils and fats. Matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, it creates a perfect balance between sweet vanilla and spicy fruit notes.

GlenGarioch 1991 27 year old Cask#2920 Beery Bros & Rudd for Shinanoya.

Really good stuff of GlenGarioch 1991. Bold peat smoke and coffee liquor, burnt malty with dried woodiness aroma. No perfume fragrance. With smooth mouthfeel, creamy malty sweet and stewed dry fruits flavor. Elegant smoky finish then dry soil and much cream, jelly fruits remains shortly.

Glen Garioch Whisky 12 y.o.

Glen Garioch 12 Years Old is a classic representative of the Eastern Highlands and is often considered an insider tip among connoisseurs. It comes from one of Scotland's oldest distilleries (founded in 1797) and is characterized by a robust, artisanal profile.

While many 12-year-old whiskies tend to be pleasant and smooth, Glen Garioch retains a certain "edge," coming across as down-to-earth and honest.

It is not chill-filtered, which gives it a richer texture.

Alcohol content: 48% ABV, robust.

GlenGarioch 1965 21 year old.

Delicate balance of old GlenGarioch. Floating gun powder and burnt malty, sweet aromatic woodiness and tingling peat. Old GlenGarioch smoky fragrance. With smooth mouthfeel, light perfume then gooey honey as if it causes thirsty, dry malty flavor with woody spices. Sticky sweet finish then jelly like fruits and dry soil, smoke remains.

GlenGarioch 1975 13 year old Cadenhead’s Black Dumpy Bottle.

Pretty dry peaty and intense sweet GlenGarioch. Oily hemp rope and slightly medicinal note, aromatic dry peat and vanilla, roast malty and somehow yellow fruits aroma. Impressive dry peat fragrance. With smooth mouthfeel, comfortable dry malty and touch of vanilla, intense malty sweet and bitter sweet flavor with sticky spices. Peat and smokey finish then sweet burnt malty and cream, earthy soil remains longly.
